Smash 3DS Unlocking characters playing 1VS1 matches?

This might be a dumb question but I was just wondering if you can unlock characters just from playing online for glory matches, if you can where do you go to fight them once you reach a certain amount of matches?

If you can, you can probably go to normal versus after the 10 matches online and do one quick match and the challenger might appear.

For glory counts towards smash mode matches for unlocking but you must play a regular vs match to get challenged. My unlocks are the same as they should be from matches i've played, majority of which are for glory.

After playing for glory for a while I played one offline match and for 4 offline matches in a row a character challenged me for unlock.
