Unlocking characters in Group(multiplayer)

Is it possible to unlock stuff in Vs. matches in Group? I'm planning to play the game on release with someone, it would be cool if I could get the secret characters while playing in multiplayer.

Yeah I know that, I'm asking if you need to play solo to unlock it or you can do it in multiplayer

I would assume you can do it in either or.

I watched Zipzo's stream earlier, he played local matches and the match count accumulates but you don't get challenged until you back out of multiplayer into the menu.

Yes you can unlock from local multiplayer matches.
