Unlockable items?

Are there any unlockable Items in brawl? There seems to be space in the item menu.

On another note what is the purple circle two spaces above the soccer ball?

I believe you unlock different varieties of Assist Trophies, though I have not heard anything about items being unlocked.

oh my god theres a space on the front menu...perhaps theres a new menu feature that enables playing as bosses!

the game is what it is. everyone needs to stop looking so deep. YOu look to hard at something and make yourself see things you desire. Its a bad habit

Seriously, who cares. The items we have now are fun and awesome pitfall, does it really matter if there are 2 or 3 more?
