Unlockable characters

Luigi and Toon Link have been officially announced. I think we all know that these characters have been unlocked in past Smash games and have never been officially announced until after the game has launched. Do you think we'll have to unlock all the characters now or will they all be announced and available from the start?
Personally I would rather have unlockable characters. It adds more play time plus it keeps the speculation up.
What do you think? Should we know who we get to play as right away or is the process of unlocking too tedious?

I am pretty sure we will have unlockables most likely most of the new characters will be hidden characters

I think Toon Link will be unlockable. Starting off with 2 Links seems kind of odd.

I was wondering about this myself. Sonic and Snake were characters revealed but the Toon Link and Luigi situation is a different case as they are returning characters and are not third party. I feel like Luigi might be available from the start and Toon Link you will have to unlock. IDK, that way just makes sense to me. All I know is I hope you still have to unlock certain characters, as I like that part of the game.

It does seem a little odd to unlock characters that we know are already there. I always thought that the point of unlocking characters was meant to be a secret in the game, and it was a discovery for players. Maybe Sakurai is disappointed that when the Brawl characters were leaked everybody knew about even before we got the game. So instead of leaks all the characters will be announced prior.

I'm starting to get the impression that most of the older characters and clones will be available at the start, while most of the newcomers well be unlockable. That was one of the things that was off putting in Brawl. The Dojo gave the impression that we were seeing the tip of the iceberg when it came to characters. Instead the majority of new comers were available at the start, while the majority of unlocakbles were old characters and clones. Brawl felt really backwards in that regard.

I agree, it is odd, but that could very well be the case given his reasoning to not having cut scenes in the game.

Honestly, the starting roster should be 35 characters, like Brawl, with only Wii Fit Trainer and Villager as newcomers. The other newcomers should be unlockables, plus 2 veterans (I'd say R.O.B. and Falco) assuming there's no cuts.

It would be kinda unique to the series to see all the new characters brought into the roster be locked from the start. Since all the returners have been in previous Smash titles, I can live with the fact that veterans could be ready from the get go.

Of course, this is Sakurai we're talking about here, however. He's pretty unpredictable. My guess is that both Luigi and Toon Link will be locked. Obviously Megaman will be locked as well.

Wii Fit Trainer and Villager should be there at the start.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see. If Falco and Ganon gets confirmed prior to launch then I think its safe to suspect there aren't any locked characters.

If I have to go play hundreds of vs matches or go through an entire tediously long adventure mode just to unlock my most favourite characters one more time....

If I had to guess, most newcomers should be portrayed as unlockables, with only the Villager and Wii Fit Trainer being the starting newcomers.

Luigi, Toon Link and Megaman will be the only unlockable characters so far. I think most veterans from Brawl will be released to the website even if they are unlockable.

You guys are seriously jumping to conclusions that there are no unlockable characters

1 third partys are special mentions and they will have to be unlocked

2 i really doubt both links will be starters i think toon link is unlock able easily changed too the same way you unlock young link in melee

3 you guys have no proof that luigi and toon link are starters

4 sakurai will probably keep it a secret of which characters are unlockable if luigi and toon link are still unlockable

5 if mewtwo is not the pokemon revealed in october its either hes unlock-able or he is not complete enough to show him off

6 if jigglypuff is revealed it does not mean SHES a starter

7 sakurai could be revealing both starters and unlockables just to show the changes he made for each character from the previous games

To be fair, since Sakurai expressed his annoyance when the SSE cutscenes were all leaked over the internet, ruining the surprise factor and all. It's not that out there to think he might feel the same way about unlockable characters. Deciding to make them all starters now as they would all be leaked anyway once the games come out in at least one region. Ruining the surprise again.

But if that's the case then I would say that he should aim for a worldwide release just like Gamefreak does for Pokemon X and Y. :/

I'm still hoping for unlockable characters though. As it just wouldn't feel the same if the whole roster was just given to you... :/

Dude he started to reveal the unlockable characters for brawl one day after it was release in japan before usa had it and plus the whole roster was already revealed before he even started did he even care if the whole roster got revealed besides he never said anything about the characters in that interview about story mode being kicked

Double post

Not all characters are secret

in marvel vs capcom 3 they revealed all of the characters in the basic version and 4 of them were unlockable and this was before it was release sakurai could be doing the same thing they did he might reveal the starters an unlockables before the game is released so no surpises get ruined and the character reveals are the surprises

Besides sonic and snake were unlockable and they were revealed anyway then after the release they got there how to unlock boxes on the brawl dojo he could do the same thing with the characters who are unlockable in smash bros wii u/3ds

Smashoperatingbuddy, could you please use some full stops and comma's in your replies?

Anyway, Since Brawl was out in Japan already then yeah it would make sense to reveal the hidden characters and talk about them as well, no need to wait all the way until the European release in order to then start revealing them.

But hey, I'm not saying that Toon Link and Luigi (and I guess Megaman) will definitely be starters now. Just that it's difficult to tell for now. Sakurai is an unpredictable man after all. When you think you got him figured out, he will start throwing at you something completely different and throw you off from there.
So he may as well reveal the hidden characters just for promotional reasons but they will remain hidden once the game releases, or he could have simply pulled a Melee Ness and Captain Falcon and made half of them into starters and the other half remain unlockables so more newcomers can be unlockables.

Who knows, really. :/

If Sora Ltd. changes it up and has all characters unlocked at the start... I would be depressed. What would really be the point in other modes? There might has well only be Versus Mode if that is the case. Unlocking characters in Smash was always the allure. Jigglypuff and Luigi were always special because they were unlockable. So why fix something that isn't broken? If Sakurai was appealing to the competitive scene, I would think differently. However, he is targeting the casual demographic. So unlockables are all but confirmed.

Yeah I love unlocking characters as well. Though I kinda wouldn't mind seeing some veteran unlockables become starters and have more newcomers become unlockables. Something I really loved in Melee was how every character you unlocked was someone new you haven't played yet. Which made getting them a lot of fun. But in Brawl, most of them were veteran fighters which made unlocking them not really as much fun and interesting in my opinion. So I wouldn't really mind them turning a few veteran unlockable characters into starters and keep the other half as unlockables and have most of the newcomers as unlockables. But yah. I guess that's just my opinion eh?

I agree, I would prefer to have veterans as starters. I actually wouldn't mind the original 10 being the only playable characters. You would unlock Jigglypuff and Luigi super easily (5 and 10 versus matches). The rest would get exponentially harder. The Melee veterans would unlock first and on average be easier. Followed by Brawl veterans. I would then want the Smash 4 newcomers to be the hardest to unlock. That would be fun for me. I could see why people wouldn't want that though.

Yes that would be cool. And I realize something in the smash bros series i think it is going to be mostly newcomers as unlockable but a few veterans are unlcokable. (im sure toon link is one of them)

It was like this for series

Melee 2 veterans unlcokable rest of them are newcomers (but defense only 12 characters in the first)

In brawl 8 veterans verses 6 newcomers as unlockables in brawl

But anything can happen

Besides something occured to me maybe toon link is a starter and hes required to unlock toon zelda since sakurai planned her for brawl

I think it's worse to announce a character and then you have to go through a process of unlocking him or her. I was pretty annoyed that I had to unlock Snake and Sonic, despite them popping up in every promotion. We're going to see a lot of Toon Link and Luigi in screenshots and videos, why hurt the player by having to go through a process of unlocking instead of being able to jump in right away and play?

No unlocks through story mode. HATED THAT IMMENSELY IN BRAWL..
I want surprises and a challenge. They should start with the original 64 Characters. Start with 8 and build from there.
I hope to see a super super secret unlockable character.

Even when knowing about every character, from leaks or whatever, "challanger aproaching" still gives me chills. If I was told about every character that would be unlockable in smash4 today, by Sakurai himself. I would still want him to keep them as unlockables.

I went to my cousins house the other week and he got his hands on a gamecube with melee, unused. When "challanger approaching" came up (it was Marth) we still got all excited lol. I would hate if they took away this part from the series. It just gives such a great feeling. :)

Another thing occurred to me. Remember that siren when megaman was introduced maybe thats the challenger approaching siren as well. You know when you fight an unlockable character. If another newcomer gets the same siren sound i would be commenced that unlockable characters is still alive

just one last thing do you guys believe in your heart and soul that sakurai would get rid of this mechanic when he does listen to the fans of what they want according to the interview of how hard he works on the smash brothers series
