Understanding Tourney rules

Hey guys,

I've decided I want to start entering tournaments and stuff. Yeah I realise Ill probably lose a lot to begin with and dunno if nerves will be a factor but that's all good.

I'm just having a look at the rulesets of my local tourneys with how stage striking and all that works and just wanted to clarify a few parts and much sure I understand the general flow (Double Elim, Best of 3, Striking is 1-2-1, Winner Bans 2.)

Let's just say its round 1 between Bob and Steve. In what order is character and stage picking done and how is it determined who goes first for picking things?

As far as I know with game 2 and beyond, Winner bans X stages, loser picks a stage, Winner picks character, loser picks character and away you go.

Also would like a bit of clarification of how stage banning works. Say these are the stages for Starters and CP:

Starters:

Battlefield/Miiverse
FD/Palutena Omega
Dreamland
Town And City
Smashville

Counterpicks:

Lylat Cruise
Castle Siege
Delfino Plaza Duck Hunt
Halberd

So lets say in game 1 Bob strike's Battllefield, Steve strikes FD and Dreamland and from the remaining stages of Smashville and T&C bob pick's T&C.

When it comes to the next round, Is it only stages in the counter pick selection are allowed to be picked from? Even if in my example Smashville never got striked from the first round because its not a counter pick stage it cant be chosen?

Lets say it comes down to the 3rd match. Is it still Counterpicks only? So banned stages get refreshed from CP's with the winning from 2nd game banning 2 stages again or do the previous 2 bans from the 2nd game still remain and they get to ban 2 more stages with the remaining stage being used?

I know the above is probably confusing as but I'd appreciate any advice so I can wrap my head around it.

Strikes only last for round one, that is every starter and counterpick are allowed for games 2-3 except the stages the loser bans. I think you can go to a stage that you banned on game 3, but that might be a regional thing. Also be aware that in most tournaments you can't go back to a stage you won on in game 3-5 unless your opponent agrees (Dave's stupid rule.)

Not that relevant but if both players agree you can go to any stage even the normally banned ones. I wouldn't expect most players to agree to playing on a banned stage if it's a big tournament but that is a thing.

If you have any other questions about the rules just ask the TOs, they will be happy to help.

There's a few variances between tourney's here so I figure I make sure I at least understand basics first and then I can ask about any variances for each one.

So know just to figure out how stage and character picks work for the first game in a set.

For the first pick you do stage striking from the starters, normally you play Rock Paper Scissors to see who strikes first. The first person strikes one the second player strikes two then the first player strikes one more leaving one stage. Alternatively you can both agree to a stage and skip striking.

Then you pick characters, normally people just pick but if either player wants (like if both players are trying to pick a counter) you can do a blind pick.

A blind pick has one player tell a judge thier pick the second player selects their character, the first player then locks in what they told the judge so nither player knows who the other player picked when choosing characters. Most people don't blind pick because it takes a lot longer.

Dave's Stupid Rule isn't used at every event. And I don't think it should ever be used, because it's... well, stupid.
If you can't win on a specific stage you don't ban/strike then Git Gud.

I didn't say it was used at every event but it is used enough that a new player should be aware of it.
