So when I go to stage builder (trying to use the "hackless" method), nothing happens. I tried deleting everything from the card and seeing if Brawl recognized it at all, and apparently it didn't, because trying to save a picture got me the message in the title. The common troubleshooting options haven't worked for me: yes, it's a 2gb card - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0..._m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=074T9QD9HSFSQ7SJCHMR - I bought it specifically because one of the reviewers said it worked with PM; no, it's not locked; yes, it's formatted to FAT32, I've reformatted it like 5 times.

Any idea what else it could be? I'm stuck here.

when oyu formatted it, did you do anything with the allocation size?.. it should be set to the default which is 4096 bytes... also did you turn off quick format?..

Yep, it was set to 4096 and quick format was off. Still nothing.

if you still can't save anything to it i think you've gotten a bad card... it's rare but it does happen that some cards or brands known to work just doesn't...
