Typing relations

I'm bored let's discuss typings.

Anyways, types all have some sort of relationship to another type as it's quite obvious. There are many ways to describe the relationships to so here I go.

Type Triangles:
A group of 3 types that when you go in one direction, their super-effective against the next type but when you go the other direction, the attack is resisted. There are 5 type-triangles in the game:

Fire->Grass->Water
Grass->Ground->Poison
Flying->Fighting->Rock
Psychic->Fighting->Dark (It's not perfect as Dark is immune to Psychic attacks)
Fire->Steel->Rock

The Fire-Grass-Water trio is obvious as it's the same typing as the starters and it also helps with who your rival will choose (even though 4th gen defeats that purpose as each starter has a move that will OHKO the other 2).

The Psychic-Fighting-Dark trio is a very good one to point out as these types represent different thought processing. Fighting represents violence, Psychic represents thinking, while Dark represents deep emotions. Brawn is not affected by emotions but gets outsmarted easily. Thinking into deep thoughts is bad and never works. That's my reasoning on this.

The Flying-Fighting-Rock combo eluded me at first but annoying brought it up and it is indeed a type-triangle. Men cannot hit a bird but he can throw a rock at it to knock it down (killing 2 bird with one stone). That's how I view this.

Now the oddball, Grass-Ground-Poison trio. I have no clue to why this works out but it does and just seems like coincide to me. If anyone has an explanation please tell me cause I am lost on this one. It does have a jungle sense to it though (thanks Spire :D)

I also overlooked the Fire-Steel-Rock trio. This is probably due to the process of materials. Fire is used to mold steel and steel is used to cut through rocks. Rocks (dirt) are used to put out a fire. Makes sense to me. Thanks pink reaper.

Those are the only true trios you will see but here is the explanation for other stuff:

Normal and Ghost are the only types in which the other type is immune to the attack (Normal takes nothing from Ghost attacks and Ghost takes nothing from Normal attacks). Most people don't believe in Ghosts while Ghosts cannot be touched by a human. Makes sense to me.

Dragon resisting fire, grass, electric, and water due to those being the 4 natural elements of the world in which dragons can live amongst. Pretty basic knowledge I think.

Flying being immune to Ground is quite obvious, when does a bird get affected by an earthquake?

Ice hits flying and grass for SE damage because of the winter. Bird fly south for the winter to get warm while no plant appears during the winter because it's cold. Pretty basic.

Typing pentagons: 5 types that hit 2 other types for SE damage

Fire
Rock Ice
Ground Grass

Fire> Ice and Grass
Ice> Grass and Ground
Grass> Ground and Rock
Ground> Rock and Fire
Rock> Fire and Ice

Thank annoying1359 for this info.

I could go on and on but i'm getting bored of this now. I will update it later.

Fighting / Rock / Flying. I've been wondering if there are any type pentagons...

Heh, I appreciated the read. I've never noticed the Grass->Ground->Poison trio before, and it's interesting. As a conglomerate concept, I just think of jungles. Hmm. Everything else is spot on.

Hmm.. I guess we can add:
Steel is weak to fire because fire melts metal, etc.

This reminds me of a concept I came up with nearing two years ago that detailed a "temperature" stat that applied to types. Here's the chart (I actually managed to find it):

Make sense of it as you will. I don't necessarily support this any longer, just wanted to show.

it's really really close on both of them

2nd one is missing just one resistance (ice doesn't resist grass)
first one is missing 2 (fighting doesn't resist steel and ice doesn't resist flying)

Second one works.

Fire > Ice + Grass
Ice > Grass + Ground
Grass > Ground + Rock
Ground > Rock + Fire
Rock > Fire + Ice

Asking for resistances is asking for too much.

Agreed with Annoying. In a pentagonal type system an equal amount of resistances is asking for too much or just altogether impossible.

Good job on that, by the way.

Eggmanland, obviously.
I used to do this for fun.

But in chain form.

Let's see if I can remember it.....

[Bug-Dark-Ghost-Psychic-Poison-Grass-Water-Ground-Electric-Flying-Fight-Steel-Rock-Fire-Ice-Dragon] Dragon can then loop into itself.

[Poison-Grass-Water-Fire-Steel-Rock-Ice-Ground-Electric-Flying-Bug-Dark-Ghost-Psychic-Fight-Normal]
