Tumbling after a waveland on a platform

Sometimes when I play if I waveland on a platform and slide off the edge of it I will go into a tumble animation and hit the ground and lie there or I can tech it. This tumble instead of the normal falling animation messes me up. I was wondering, what causes this and how can I avoid it?

This happens if you're shielding as you slide off the edge. Practice wavedashing on a flat surface, making sure you let go of the shield button fast enough that your shield doesn't come up at the end of the slide.

^Yep

There are also times where it'll just happen in a match like if you're shielding on a platform facing into the center of the platform and someone hits you, you can avoid the knock down by fast falling (pressing down) immediately after you fall off (you'll still be in tumble state but you'll land normally).

So that's what it is. Thanks I had only seen it when I was marth (which was why I posted in the marth boards) and I get a long waveland so I thought it had something to do with the speed when I got to the edge. Thanks again this opens a lot of options for me.
