Trying to improve at this game

So I bought the Wii U mainly because of smash. So far 98% of my for glory 1v1's have been me getting destroyed. I win sometimes and I actually 2 stocked someone today. But I think the hardest thing about this game to me is understanding what moves to use at the right time. I've been maining fox and liking it, but I notice I'm always just spamming f-tilt or dash attack or doing something stupid. I know I'm playing wrong and his best abilities are up-smash and up-tilt but why does everyone say his up-smash is so amazing when it's near impossible to land? I understand it's his strongest attack but any good player will make it so I can never land it. It's probably just me I know.

So the match starts, and I have a number of different ways to approach my enemy. Dash attack, go for a grab, foward B, play defensively. I never know what to do and I just resort to spamming attacks like an idiot. One of my biggest weaknesses are grabs. I can NEVER land a grab and every time I go in for a grab I just get grabbed myself and combo'd all day. I run up to my enemy press grab and nothing happens like what? Is it even worth grabbing as fox since all his grabs feel pretty weak? I understand his d-throw can lead to a f-air.. (I find it very hard to connect those 2 though you have to be really quick about it)

So yeah, I'm just frustrated and don't know what I should be doing to improve. Any fox tips would be appreciated. thanks

Fox tips, huh? Well, I'm not a Fox main or anything, but you should try to use Fox's speed and speedy attacks to your advantage. For Glory often likes to roll a lot, so make sure you bait one by running at them. Their reaction is usually to roll behind you, so try a turnaround grab.
But if you're still feeling terrible, then you should try training mode. Try practicing with a Lv. 9 CPU on Evade (Run) and try to read their movements. It'll help you predict better and have a quicker reaction time. I hope this helps!

The level 9 CPU evade mode sounds like a good idea. I'm gonna try it. Thanks!

SORRY FOR SELF AD! Check out my fox guide. Or other ones, you know.

Slightly dated, but still working, and I plan on updating soon.

Fox is a really technical character. If you know your character really well, but you still feel like you're doing something wrong, then it's probably your fundamentals. Check this out if you don't understand.

Fundamentals are the basic elements of Smash, for every game. Mechanics differ slightly, but remain essentially the same. Spacing and pressure are two of the main concepts, along with movement and zoning. Search up things like "Shield Pressure" or "Footsies" or "Spacing" or "The Neutral". Or let me do the work for you.

This guy's whole series is great, watch all 4 parts. He has one about zoning, too.

One about Footsies and Movement.

Really good post about shield pressure.

Also, save replays of EVERY MATCH YOU LOSE. Watch them. If you have a capture card, use it and upload to your computer, to make them easier to watch (Rewind FTW). Hell, post them here, ask for help 'cause it's what we do here.Try to see what you did wrong ie. why you missed, why you got hit, etc.

Overall, you really need a solid understanding of the game before you start Fox. I know he's great, but without fundamentals, he is just to easy to punish. Sorry for assuming you are new, but...

Hope this stuff helped.
