Trouble against Game & Watch

I had the privilege to attend my first real tournament at Florida State University today. It was sort of dumb because it was an open tourney and a lot of people were eliminated through free-for-all, but eventually it came down to 1vs1's, and

I lost my 1v1 vs. a Game & Watch who abused the D-throw D-smash combo. He would do this repeatedly and send me flying across the floor of the stage and then outwards off the ledge, and each time it was done, it would rack considerable damage. Basically when he D-threw me, I was stuck on the ground and couldn't do anything to protect myself from the D-smash. I wasn't very pleased to get eliminated with the same cheap move over and over again.

Is there any way to fight this, or do I just need to fight future games with the incentive of keeping a fair amount of distance from G&W?

You can tech his down throw. Press R or L as you're about to be slammed into the ground from the down throw while holding a direction to avoid the following down smash.

The best he can do to follow up with anything is predict which way you'll tech and go for another grab/dash attack (?)/or a bucket if you're really unfortunate. But in that situation, he's guessing. If you have to make him guess which way you'll tech, you can actually not tech and not be punished since he'll d-throw and already be running to where he predicted (unless he has a bucket, in which case you take it cause he never intended to run). The d-throw only does like 5% undiminished I believe so if you learn to tech it, he pretty much wastes his grab everytime he gets ahold of you as long as you're not too predictable.

Hope this helps. Good luck at your next tourney.

Also, Mr. Game & Watch is Lucas's worst matchup last I checked, so yeah. What he said. And at the risk of stating the obvious, be careful with your projectiles and recovery, since they can all be absorbed by Oil Panic.

Alright thanks, I thought I might be able to tech out of it but it wasn't really happening for me, and I don't have access to a wii anymore so I couldn't test it after the tourney.

Personally I don't believe G&W is that difficult for Lucas but I've only played so much vs. each character. Other than this G&W's constant D-throw combo we were pretty evenly matched. He just had a trick up his sleeve and I didn't know the counter to it. General knowledge won.

The hardest matchups I have are vs. Wolf and Marth, but mostly Marth. If I were to pick a worst MU for Lucas it would be vs. Marth, because I have to play significantly better to kill Marths. It's been quite awhile since I checked these forums so I don't know exactly what new stuff people have found out and such.

If AFA and ABA are what I think they are (forward air and back air?), shield through them. G&W's fair has a decent amount of lag upon landing, so try shieldgrabbing after he lands. According to the recent grab analysis on the tactical board, Lucas has one of the best pummels in the game, and all his throws kill mario from the middle of FD at around 145%, so make good use of your grabs.

I don't really remember G&W's bair having too much lag, but if you can learn how long the turtle stays out for, you can time your shield to end right afterwards and grab, ftilt, dtilt, or jab.

G&W has fast hit after landing, such as bucket, jab or another SH/FH AFA/ABA.

Killing isn't the problem : G&W is really light, we can kill with many others moves. Moreover, Lucas's grab is so slow, and if it misses, really laggy, and G&W has a powerful and fast enough Fsmash if he avoids the grab. I don't want to risk to waste any time, it's very punishable.

His hitboxes are very durative, and that's why I've so much problems with G&W. No viable moves can't be used after his AFA/ABA, and he powns all my approachs/defensive game.

If GW fullhops a bair, run under him and upsmash. They usually pull back so if you run past them a bit it can score you a kill.

Though it will only work once lol.
