How does everyone feel about these this time around? Personally, I find the colloquial tone of a lot of them to be a little irritating. I just remember, as a kid, really enjoying the informative nature of the Melee trophies as a means of soaking up Nintendo knowledge.

Just a gripe, though. It's impressive that they even write descriptions for all of the hundreds of trophies in the game. Any of you guys learned anything particularly interesting from any of them?

I miss the serious descriptions and character backstory. They're occasionally amusing, but I preferred the old style.

I hate the "in this game" parts. I want to know about the character/item in their respective series, I know what they do in Smash.

I think Melee did it best in how it portrayed trophies. We had one set of trophies for fighters that went into detail about their histories and what they did in their respective games, and then we had another set describing their playstyle and the types of moves that they can use. Even the stage element and pokeball Pokemon trophies managed to get in enough information about the characters themselves, while writing in one or two brief sentences about what they do in-game.

Compare the differences between Ridley's Melee/Brawl trophies and his Wii U trophy, and you'll see just how little the game goes into explaining who these NPCs are exactly.

I want more info on the characters outside of Smash. Melee was so informative; I loved scrolling through all the trophies.

I don't mind the colloquial tone

Wow, yeah. When you read them back-to-back, it's really jarring. All that stuff in Ridley's trophy description should just be in the hints when you're about to play on Pyrosphere! Probably is, actually.

Agreed, I prefer the more informative trophy descriptions.

I feel like the other games bored me to sleep with the trophy descriptions. I like the new humorous tone.

I really liked the informative stuff from previous games (although there is some here too) but I also like the lightheartedness in this game. The only thing I miss is how Melee handled character trophies-- classic had background on the character while smash and all-star had info on the character in the game.

I actually like the new humorous tone. You can tell the writers had fun working on these especially since previously it was just a generic description that either describes history either people already know about the character or something you can just look up on the wiki nowadays. These trophy descriptions like to give out info in it's own unique and "Smashing" way. Though I do agree I hate when some trophy descriptions tells you info about the how the character works in Smash if they have a certain role, especially since the game already gives you those types of descriptions via the loading screen tips.

I like the new humorous tone in the descriptions. Melee did it best, yeah, but this still better than Brawl's. They don't read like Wikipedia entries any more.

I prefer the more humorous tone, the trophy descriptions weren't hilarious, but I got a decent chuckle out of them. I only really hate it when the entire description is a joke, rather than information with a joke or two.

Yeah, the trophy descriptions are really not that informative.

"Hey, at least Takamaru got a trophy, people will read about him and get interested in his game!" - That's what I tought at first.
But his trophy description is:
"The main character of The Mysterious Murasame Castle. In this game, he dashes and jumps straight to the nearest opponent and shows off his swift sword skills. If he's got a bit of distance, he uses his special ninja techniques, based on the rock and the bishop in Japanese chess, to send projectiles spinning through the air."

Come on.

Wow, that IS really awful and honestly really lazy. They might as well just copy paste tips in and then say "by the way he's from ____". :|

Yeah, the whole "In this game" thing is really irritating. I'd love to learn about the characters themselves. Not what they do in the game, what is the point of that? I can figure that out myself by just playing the game OR read the... you know, TIPS?!

Aside from that, I love the humorous tone.

I abosulutely love these for simple reaosns. It's from eartbhound writer and actually, I could explain you a long post on it, but earthbound humor is almost = to Paper Mario humor (mainly TTYD and spm).

Basically, of course I lvoe them....if only I could read them in hey gorgeous, that would be the best :)

Itoi himself wrote every line of dialogue in EB if memory serves. He didn't write these. I love EB's dialogue, as it's just so bizarrely real, but these trophy descriptions just come off as forced.

weird, I've heard somewhere it was from earthbound or maybe it was mother and I'm confusing stuff....

Still, it still feels like Paper Mario humor to me....especially the 4th wall stuff.

idk, but these are imo better.....

To me, it's not because of their humorous tone that I dislike the games' trophy description, it's more on the fact that it's inconsistent over whether it should be comical or "informative". I mean there's the descriptions of Phosphora and the Devil Car which more or less have some humor in them, and then we have the Ridley and Takamaru trophies, which seem as though they were just copied-and-pasted from the in-game screen tips. And these are just from characters who have an in-game role, so it's not like there was a necessity to properly give information to these characters without adding in a joke or two.

I think I read somewhere that the some members of the EarthBound translation team also translated Smash 4's trophy descriptions.

For me, the knowledge in the descriptions is pretty much non-existent. Not only do the descriptions focus more on 10-year old humor, but the parts that actually contain knowledge have a high risk of being wrong! Around half of the Pikmin trophies have at least one mistake, it's ridiculous.

I actually prefer their full description of their backstories and everything rather than putting in their small description from Smash. Every time I see the words "In Smash Bros." or anything like that, I stop reading them.

The quality of trophy text in Brawl and SSB4 are slipping, imo. The 3DS version doesn't even tell you what game the trophy's subject is from. So, whereas in Melee, the informative, articulate trophy descriptions could get people interested in other Nintendo games, the more flippant and sketchy ramblings in SSB4's trophies probably aren't netting many fans. I guess it's a consequence to having almost a four-figured number of paragraphs to write; they can't all be pristine.
