Tourny display settings on 16:9 screen

I have a 16:9 display screen and I have been using the dolphin emulator to play melee. I don't care much for graphics or anything really, but I would like to practice (at home) how I play (In a tournament) and have my settings be as consistent as possible.

I understand that the crt monitors are most likely 4:3, and melee is not a native 4:3 game. To emulate how it would appear on a crt like this (are the top and bottom cut off?), should I just check the crop box in advanced graphic settings or leave as is?

Obviously I could get a crt screen but it's a pain. I may do it someday, but for now my 16:9 works well, Acer GN24hl @144hz

Melee is a native 4:3 game. It can only be displayed in 16:9 using dolphin (+gecko codes) or a hacked melee iso.
I recommend you not to play in 16:9 because you will not be used to how the camera normally moves in 4:3, which is the standard.

Yes I dont plan to play the game on a 16:9 resolution, only on that type of display.

I recall melee being 73:60, and you can see here that when I don't select the crop to 4:3 option, it seems more squished and more of the scene is seen vertically.

Uncropped

Cropped

Anywho, I decided just to leave it uncropped, thank you anyway though :)

You are completely correct! Your line "Are the bottom and top cut off [when using a crt]" was what let me think you wanted to play in 16:9. That's because playing melee natively (73:60) using a 4:3 display would result in small black lines on the right and left, not on the top and bottom (which would happen if you played in 16:9!). Lots of people I know play with 16:9 and you also being a new User led to my oversimplification, saying Melee a native 4:3 game.

I would leave it uncropped as well since it deviates from the standard.

When playing offline, I recommend using FasterMelee, creating a netplay session with just yourself, setting the pad buffer to 4 and then starting the game. This results in 32 added ms of lag, minus the 40ms that FM reduces on a 120+hz display (source), effectively reducing lag by about 8ms. I use a 144hz monitor (Asus VG248QE) myself and find this setup the most CRT-like in terms of input lag. Leffen posted the same on twitter at some point: that he finds a buffer of 32ms(buffer pad 8 using FM 4.3) most crt-like with his 144hz monitor using FM.

Ah cool, I'll go ahead and try that out. I'm not sure my monitor has the same input lag as yours, but either way it should help. Thanks for the links :D
