Basically the title. After seeing today's post and watching some Smash playing on the Comicon stream, I began to wonder about tournament mode. Being a mode that really is only used for multiplayer between friends, do you think it will be in Smask 3DS? Personally I love that mode as it was the only one I played during my time with melee and brawl (Aside from the character unlocks I helped my friend with.)

However, I realize my like for this mode is likely in the minority and is very unlikely to be fetured on the 3DS, which can only be played by one player unless you use ad-hoc or something, and it's been made clear the online mode likely does not have it. While I would like to battle it out with level 9 CPUs in a tournament bracket, it just doesn't seem likely to happen. What's your opinion?

I think if it'll happen it'll be under the "Smash" option in the main menu. I'm not sure why they'd ever remove it outright, because it was a fun game mode, but I really have no idea if it'll be in the same form we're used to or not.

I hope it's in, because I liked it in Melee.

I don't know i don't think it will be in.
Yeah I'm surprised so many people think it'll be in. Though only one person posted why they thought that but at least that's something to go on. Tournament mode was originally made to play with friends and against each other, in spite of including computers so since the 3DS is mostly a solo affair apart from online I didn't think it would be in once I sat down to think about it. I still hope it will be though.

I didn't use the mode at all in Melee and Brawl, but hopefully it's in for those who liked using that. I think ''Smash'' is going to be either..
1. Only the VS. multiplayer matches mode.
2. Classic, All-Star, and VS mode + Tournament mode. (It's more likely since it's been confirmed that All-Star is in the 3DS version and the new Classic Mode was shown briefly at the 3DS E3 trailer.)

Personally, I'm looking at the roster and already seeing 39 character (I count the three mii types as different characters since they are) and I'm hoping for close to 50 characters total. That also makes me hope 64 character tournament returns from Melee.

Brawl's 32 just made me sad cause you couldn't even battle with all the character's on the roster, making you have to leave some out.

Of course, with 64 returning maybe that'd mean about 14 double characters... I'd have to figure out that one.

I'd love for Tournament Mode to return, preferably with more options (such as double elimination, round robin, etc). Preferably robust enough to save tournament operators the trouble of tracking everything manually.

Oh yeah, that would be pretty great. Though that's more likely to affect the Wii U version than the 3DS one.

I'd like it on both (have it verify by 3DS name or something), but would definitely expect the U version to be more robust (if the 3DS has a version at all).

Oh thinking about it, since there are some characters with Male/female swaps I could use those. (I know they aren't different from the normal version but that won't stop me)
Villager, Wii Fit Trainer and Robin can be both genders. I think that's all right now. so that'd go up to 53 easily enough assuming the roster goes to 50.

Could possibly run different variants of Mii Fighters to fill in the slots. Different loadouts. Possibly same for Palutena as well.

Oh yeah, with the customizable moves huh. That'd be pretty awesome too. Nice idea!

Kinda more on-topic, I think the tournament mode, if implemented in the 3DS version, would probably have to use a registry lobby, and from that (which, lobby size would determine maximum tournament size), choose between speed of tournament or spectating. If you went with tournament speed, it could (with a certain DS as host or whatever) alert the client games of who their opponent is, to facilitate parallel matches in the earlier stages of the tournament. With the host system, the matches could then report back to the host DS with the result, and thus update the bracket live as each match is finished. If it was set for spectation, it could work like Melee/Brawl and just show one match at a time while the rest look on. I think having the host 3DS would be a better plan (as it reduces the number of failure points and keeps operation localized), though whether the host would be able to participate or not would be a matter of implementation.

If tournament mode is in the game; here's hoping they let you have 64 entrants like in Melee, and then allow you to do round robins so you can set up a tourney that pits you against the entire cast.

Yeah, that'd be pretty cool. I didn't use the mode as much in both Melee and Brawl, though.

One of the Biggest draws of Tournament mode is that there is multiplayer. So you and any umber of friends could fight your way through it. With the 3DS, unless it has some ad hoc play at the very least, you don't think it would be cut from the list?

Well, they did have that system where you could choose to pass, so maybe if you're using more than one character when they end up matched against each other you choose which one moves on automatically or something.

Well, the game IS trying to appeal to the competitive audience, so I can imagine a small implementation of striking and various tournament styles this time around.

True true. So do people think Round Robin and/or Double elimination tournaments are really possibilities to be added to the mode then? Single elimination is a bit straightforward, but it works out okay. Round Robin and Double Elimination would take more time and effort to program into the mode.

Oh! wouldn't it be cool if you could make a smash Run tournament using tournament mode in the 3DS version?

Double Elimination would be the tricky one. Round Robin, especially with an even number of players, is really easy, since everyone plays everyone once. I don't honestly expect either of them past Single Elim, but one could hope.

And yes, a Smash Run tournament that somehow rebalances or adjusts the in-game settings to reduce the randomness (such as standardizing drops and enemy locations etc) would be glorious. Since then the complaints about it being too random would be reduced.

Balancing the non-competitive and mostly casual Smash Run?

In all seriousness, Smash Run tourneys are something I'd attend (:

Well I admit it's pretty unlikely, but so many people are convinced that tournament mode is returning that I figured I'd try to open up the discussion a bit more to possible additions to tournament mode. For the 3DS version it just seems like the Smash Run being a focus it'd make the most sense to add it to tournament mode.

Round Robin sounds pretty good too. How would they manage that if you were fighting a free for all with four people in every match though?

I'd participate even if it wasn't balanced. But the naysayers would have to backpedal if the mode became balanced, and I enjoy watching that happen.
Tournaments there would probably have to be scored alternately to simple post-match victory, though, maybe awarding different point values for different accomplishments in the round.

Round Robin is almost strictly 1v1 matches in most cases, but it could be done in FFA by assigning different point values to each rank. But if you do the FFAs, then you either have to pair players off and match the pairs, or do every combination of players in the FFA, which would take forever.

Doubles Round Robin would also be super fun.

Oh yeah, doubles round Robin would be pretty fun. Of course then you'd have to figure out which people to pair with which other people... The shipper in me will go crazy with that.

Different point values could make some sense. Maybe since you always are trying to upgrade stats and the like, maybe that could factor into smash run points somehow?

It would seem reasonable to me that since regular matches are meant to test fighting, that the Run part of Smash Run would carry the most weight for scoring (over the post-match duel). For instance, a point for each 100 stat points, a point for having the highest of the players, a point for each special mode, maybe have points for leftover items that can balance out if you earn more points using the items, points for certain checkpoints and whatnot, who knows, we'll have to see the final product. Even if it's not supported in-game, it would be pretty doable to track these things during a round and score it at the end.

That's certainly true. And that's some good ideas for keeping track of a Smash Run Tournament.

Yeah, smash run tournaments would be awesome. Me and my friends would defiantly use that.
Yeah I thought that could be pretty awesome. Especially if Smash run is going to have customizable time limits and maybe even a customizable match at the end of it, doing it in tournament mode would make so much sense for the 3DS version.

I would love for Tournament Mode to return. Round Robin -> Seeded Bracket may be a bit much for them to implement. I don't see them doing that. Double Elimination is something I could see happening but we'll have to see how they do it. I'm pretty hopeful for this mode. I haven't played Mario Kart 8 but I heard its online tournament mode was great and that's many racers. I'm sure they can do a great job with 2-4 player matches. Realistically, with a robust online tournament and great netcode, you could participate in legit tournaments daily.

Competitive Smash would be so huge!

Yeah maybe if Tournament mode could be implemented in the online with the 3DS it would get a ton more use I'm sure/

Sorry for the double post, but this will probably put this thread to rest.

So far we have not seen any evidence of tournament mode, but the Nintendo treehouse is streaming Smash 3DS later today. Hopefully, this will have all the menus in english and they will show them allowing us to know what exactly is in the game and what isn't.

So far, it isn't looking good for a mode that I was hoping would be back, but I won't give up just yet. We'll see shortly I suppose.
