I know it's a long-shot, but I'd like to see Toothless (the dragon from the How To Train Your Dragon franchise) as a playable fighter. Don't know what his final smash would be, but I feel that he overall has the potential to be a playable fighter. The main issue in including him would probably by copyright (i.e. including a DreamWorks character -- no DreamWorks content has ever been featured in a Smash game).

It's interesting how entire fictional universes (such as the DreamWorks universe, the Disney universe, the Digimon universe, etc.) are totally ignored by the Smash series.

Toothless has been featured in Nintendo video games in the past, such as the video game called "How To Train Your Dragon" and "DreamWorks Super Star Kartz".

If Toothless became a playable fighter, I would still main Yoshi (Yoshi is my favorite character), but I would choose Toothless as a secondary.

Sakurai has gone on record multiple times already (including a recent translation from his book), that characters like Goku, Iron Man, Spongebob, etc, etc. are not going to be in Smash Bros. i.e. non-game characters are off the table for the foreseeable future.

Remember, being in a video game does not make them a "game character" which in the context of Smash means they have originated from an IP that was a video game to begin with.

It's a rights/legal issue which only gets more difficult and cumbersome the more parties involved hence why characters like these aren't seen as realizable picks.

I also wouldn't say Smash is "ignoring" those other IP. They have no obligation to include content from the companies/series you listed. and they can't include everything under the sun, as there's only so much that be done in a development cycle. People are still left wanting for first party content let alone the many possibilities that could come from third parties.

And even if we do get one, I highly, HIGHLY doubt it wouldn't be somebody vastly more popular. I don't know if I should ping a mod for cases like these, or report these kinds of threads, so I'm posting in an example to ask.

well there are more ignored fictional universes than are included if you want to use that reasoning

Regarding Character Support threads:
1. Character threads must be for characters who originated from a video game.
  • 3rd parties can have franchise threads, but it's still recommended to have a focus or examples of who you think would be interesting.
  • Nintendo-owned characters don't necessarily have to originate in a video game, but must still have a video game appearance.
  • All character threads are subject to staff approval
  • 3rd party characters must also be from a game franchise first
