For as long as we've existed as simple humans, we've asked...why?
Why are we here? What is our purpose? What role do we play in the large scale of the universe?
These are questions man have pondered since the dawn of our existence. Some say we have no purpose, others say otherwise. But aside from some theories, nothing is solid. So far, we simply wander without a purpose.
I too think these thoughts. I have my theories, but I fear they are all incorrect. I didn't know what to do. I didn't know where to go. I simply felt like ending it all, there and now.
That all changed in 2002.
Touhou: The embodiment of scarlet devil is a rather swell shooter. It was ZUNs first foray into the Windows market, after making all of his games for the PC98. But there was one character that certainly caught everyone's heart.
The beloved Tomboyish child.
Cirno was the stage 2 boss, and she was known for her general childishness. (Along with her catch phrase "Eye'm da strongest!)
She later starred as one of the many playable characters in the Twinkle Star Sprites clone, Phantasmagoria of Flower view, where her true personality was set in stone. She was obviously not the sharpest tool in the shed, and was pretty weak as well. She was so stupid, in fact, that this happened:
This is an exert from the instruction manual of PoFV. It labels various aspects of the game using convenient circles numbers as labels. One thing to notice though, is the placement of the (9) label. The description below it reads "baka" aka "Idiot" for the non-Japanophillic. This forever cemented Cirno's label as a Baka in it's purest form, as well as being eternally associated with the number (9).(Which has gone on to be a synonym of baka)
Poor girl. She surely must have it hard, being kicked to the ground so many times by much more powerful characters, as well as being labeled a Baka for life.
But was this a bad thing? Surprisingly, no.
Her forever association with (9)(aka, baka) has caused her to be one of the more popular minor characters of the series. The (9) phenomenon spread like wildfire, becoming one of the Touhou project's many memes. It's a tradition on youtube to thumb up (or down) any comment on a Cirno-related video +/- 9, for starters.
And just because she was a baka, she gained enough popularity to later star in the newest Touhou fighting game, Unthinkable Natural Law. (Where she even stars on the cover!)
So is Cirno the the smartest? Maybe not. Is she the most powerful? Perhaps not either.
But because she dares to be a baka, and is so confident in her abilities, she'll challenge the Top-Tier of Gensokyo without hesitation, maybe she truly is the strongest... Maybe she is really is a genius, just because she cares not for the world itself, but simply for how she sees it.
She may be incredibly naive, but that makes her the most confident. She always thinks she's the strongest, and loses almost all of her battles.(Canonically)
She's a complete (9), but maybe it's not as bad as we think. Perhaps the rest of the world could take her example, and simply dare to be a (9). Heck even when I posted the super-spammy first incarnation of this post, I was being a (9). I may not have had as much success though, as the powers that be burned my post to the ground and gave me +3 infraction points. (meaning that if this post is also a failure, I might just be banned. ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWAH)
Maybe I'm probably not the best (9) in the world, but I tried, just like Cirno.
So maybe Cirno truly is the strongest, and we just don't know it yet. She managed to gain so much popularity just for being a simple (9), and look how far she got. And we could perhaps be like her: no matter how bad things seem, no matter how hopeless things get, we should all just turn off our brains sometimes and just be a (9). Let's all charge headfirst into unknown territory, just like a (9). It could bring us to places we never knew we could reach.
But anyway, the entire point of this rushed motivational speech was to simply provide backdrop on this very special day:
Today is 9/9/9. The day of the Baka. A day dedicated against overthinking things and just generally being Bakas. This has been a day long, long anticipated by the Touhou community, and has many boards dancing in celebration. They all celebrate one certain Baka, and claim today to be the strongest day in the history of mankind. I for one, am thankful to be alive on this one day, where the world is officially (9)001 times stronger. And you should be too.
That's why I dedicate this blog post to the lovestruck tomboy herself. It may not be as (9) as the last post, but dammit, it's enough to get the word out.
So in conclusion, it's Cirno day. It's also the day I have school, which cannot possibly be a coincidence. Oh, and it's also the day some CGI film by Tim Burton comes out, but I'll see that later. All you need to know is that this is her day. Let's give her the internet-wide celebration she deserves.
(Also, Smash blogs doesn't render the actual (9) symbol, wtf?)
