First, I'm not the first person to suggest this. Second, I posted this in other threads because I didn't think it deserved its own topic. However, when a "items in tournaments" pops up, there tends to be heated discussions where some people get very angry (both pro-item and non-item people) and all other opinions and ideas get lost in the flaming.

This is most likely due to where everyone is tired of seeing threads that have the words "items" and "tournaments" in the same sentence. Regardless of the reasons, it seems there has been no progress in coming to a resolution between the pro-item and non-item people.

All threads I've seen have been about adding items to the current tournament scene. People argue that items are a part of smash and should be tested and added. Well, thats not going to happen because people will argue about the randomness factor....and they are right.

The only real solution is if regular tournys and item tournys are to be thought of and treated as two completely separate types of events. Such as the hammer throw and ice skating....both are completely different. As far as I can see, two things need to occur for this to work.

1. Rules for item tournaments need to be created. If its a completely different event then they wouldn't necessarily have the same rules. Also, it would make the existence of item tournys offical.

2. Winners of item tournaments would need to be recognised by swf (all of us). What good is it to treat item tournys like they don't matter? It would be part of the community, right? If metamario is facing lord kirby in an item tournament, I doubt it will change the outcome of your match with marthvader in a regular tournament.

People have argued that there isn't enough interest in item tournaments to make them happen. Maybe at first, but then why are all these threads popping up?

Its a simple logical solution. Will this kill all those "add items to tourny" threads? Probably not but its worth a try.

How come this is in character discussion?

I think the randomness and luck factor with items would be the main reason why they wouldn't be treated the same way in the community as standard tournaments. There's nothing stopping anyone from hosting tournaments with any rules they want, but on the same token, there's also no need for them to be seen and treated the same as standard tournaments.

Thanks for your response. I've read several of your threads and they're definitely insightful.

First, yea, I put under the wrong discussion. My mistake.

Second, I think thats a mental block we have to get past. I agree with the randomness factor. However, some items do require skill to use. Hense, why rules must be made to see what items should be used.

Also, I think you misread part of it. I stated that item tourny should be treated as a completely different event and not the same as standard tournys.
