Although I'm not new to smash, I'm fairly new to the competitive scene and how to use techniques. Does anyone have tips on helping me learn certain techniques properly and do it consistently while playing people?

Get a friend to help you train.

Get him to knock you against the bottom of the stage to practice teching

Get him to attack you and try to power shield as many of his attacks as possible

Play Marth or megaman and have your friend try to run away from you for 2 minutes. attempt to only hit him with the tip of Marths sword or the tip of megamans pellets this will help you understand spacing

Then have him try to attack you for 2 minutes and attempt to space him with forward air tippers or neutral air pellets only. This is another spacing exercise

I can't think of anything else right now

There are tons of ways to practice teching! But also remember that while teching is generally good, it's also very situational. Sometimes it's better to wait a little bit before getting off the ground, because people can read your tech-landing and punish you for it. Teching stage spikes is also very important, and somewhat difficult to do (as seen by Evo's top 8--They all missed MANY techs against stage spikes, sometimes costing them games), but teching on stage is almost a MUST, because hardly ever will a stage spike lead to anything but a lost stock! You can even practice on For Glory if you have non-laggy friends, or in training mode with a friend at 1/2 or 1/4 speed to really get the timing right!

I think he was talking about tech skill in general, not just teching! :)

But very useful information nonetheless!!
