Tilt stick is broken

Not sure how it was in past games (dropped Brawl early because of tripping and never had WiiU), but in Ultimate when c stick is set to tilt, it has an odd behavior that can result in dropped inputs.

After doing a tilt attack, you need to return the stick to the neutral zone (seems to be about half way between neutral and full tilt) and stay there for a certain number of frames -- otherwise it won't let you do another attack (with c stick or even the A button). If you pass through the neutral zone without stopping, it doesn't count. This means that after you do a tilt, you can then throw the stick in all directions and nothing happens -- it basically turns off the stick (and A button) until you let it rest in neutral zone for a specific amount of frames again.

This is NOT how it behaves when c stick is set to smash. You can keep throwing the stick in all directions never letting it rest in neutral and it'll keep executing smash attacks.

Stick sensitivity setting doesn't seem to change this.

edit: stick set to special also acts like tilt stick.

Huh. Interesting find. I hadn't really noticed?

Sorry to tell you but it was the exact same way in Smash 4. Yes, just like Smash 4, and especially in the online environment, there will be times your character just stands/jumps instead of doing the move you wanted, and your easy punish window is gone. Or you'll try to throw that second aerial and get nothing.

I haven't tested smash stick yet but there are too many good reasons to use tilt stick in this game, so we're stuck with it.

I assume it's because of the lazy way they coded the C-stick to work in Brawl and on. Setting it to smash/tilt/special is actually a combination of move and the appropriate button. Smashes have more movement tied to them then a tilt, even if it's just by milliseconds. So if the C-stick doesn't return to neutral for the required amount of time, it's still reading it as an attack button being held down and won't allow any further attack inputs until the button is 'released'.

This is really disappointing and seems kind of lazy when they could have made Tilt-sticking, smash sticking, and special sticking call the command directly instead of fast inputting the standard controller command for it.

Leffen actually talks about this in one of his recent vids (link is to about 1/3 through the vid where he demonstrates)

Yeah it seems incredibly lazy -- like they handed it off to an intern or something.
