Tilt spam or Foward Air spam...

We've all been on the receiving end of this at one point or another, whether is Mario spamming up tilt till you get to 60-70% for free pretty much or Ness forward air spamming you off the edge multiple times with not much counter play until you are above 60%. I'm just wondering why these mechanics are in the game, and if there are anyways to beat them besides a well timed spot dodge or air dodge, which sometimes at the low percents you don't even flinch enough to be able to react until 3-4 of them hit ya. I get that everyone wants abuse the easiest game mechanics to get the advantage in a fight, but come on man put yourself in someone else's shoes if that **** was happening to you you might reconsider what you are doing.

So, lets talk about how to get out of these things. It would appear you main link. You have two options to get out of up tilt strings: either pull a bomb beforehand and let it combo break, or DI/SDI away, as explained here: DI and Smash DI! (Smash Wii U/3DS). Now, it sounds like you've encountered for glory marios/nesses. For the mario down throw to up tilt, DI down and shield immediately if you're using link and under 10%. You'll be able to shield the up tilt and punish with a grab of your own, up B, or even up smash.

Regarding ness, his fair is multihit so you can always SDI out. However, to avoid getting hit in the first place, mix up your DI. If ness grabs you, DI up and behind him, and mix it up from there. Further, I would place more emphasis on the neutral. Link has a good neutral camp/keepout game. Use your zair and projectiles to not get hit in the first place.

Oh, and uh

git gud.

yeah my general game plan is zone them away and try to never let them grab me and sometimes it works, i just main all zelda characters shiek and the dorf are my second. shiek i dont have the problem as much, but dorf once hes in he goes to 100%. i feel like an asshole spamming shootouts the entire game , but i guess this is just the nature of fighting games that brings out the worst in all of us to do the cheapest stuff possible to win. thanks for the advice and the link though!

also why the **** to we end everything with get good? are we all pro smash players who just talk non stop smack because we need to deflect from our sad lives? no need to be a **** online too strangers...

I've actually been on both sides of the coin in this situation. On one hand, Mario's up tilt is great for combos espacially with an occasional mixup thrown in, and definitely has gotten me results. On the other hand, I've been 0-death comboed on Isle Delfino while playing as Ike when Mario grabs on a platform, down throws, up tilts the crap out of me, and then up smashes at the brief low blast ceiling during the transitions.

Also, I LOVE Ness's F-air, but the recieving end always sucks.

Generally the optimal way to get out of the better fair strings is to DI down/away in this game. (Sheik, Ness)

Granted, some people can be abrasive and take competition to toxic levels, but "git gud" isn't really trash talk these days. It's more of a meme, a symbol of the anti scrub.

I used to whine to one of my friends about his projectile spam before I played competitive. But this is a competitive subforum, and the implicit understanding is that within the bounds of the software, and excepting a verrrry short list of glitches and abusive techniques, your opponent will use whatever he can to beat you, and you likewise are welcomed to use whatever you can to beat him. If there's something you're struggling with, there are two options:

- Call it dumb, annoying, or unfair. Complain about it, call for it to be banned. This is the way of the scrub.

- Respect its power, then research, experiment, and practice until you find a way to deal with it. This is called "git gud", and it's not an insult or a trash talk. It's an invitation, even a request. We genuinely want those below us to git gud to help us git better and to push the meta for our characters and the game as a whole.

You don't have to play with this attitude, but it's the only one that will get you anywhere competitively. So if you ask for help, and you don't seem to have that attitude, git gud is going to pop up. Suggested reading:

Every move you don't like that is used often isn't spam
Some moves are just better than others, which makes sense to be used most times. They link well, are fast, and deal good damage.
Complaining like this shows that you're not in the right mindset for this already, if you think these 4Glory Mario players are cheap, I want you see any Falco main play Melee, you WILL get pinned down with lasers and then shine/nair'd/grabbed/dair'd.

There is a way around just about every option, every string of attacks and every movement in this game. All it takes is some research, and some practice. Hence the saying "get good". It's not a cop out on an explanation. It's not being a douche or an ass or mean. It's the simple way of saying: "Learn the game, learn how it works and practice what makes your mains good."
You're complaining about two things we figured out how to get out of months ago.

Mario's uptilt doesn't link to 60+% if you actually DI away and make a getaway once you get out of range. Ness' fair strings are the same exact thing, DI away and don't put yourself in that situation in the first place, if you did it's something you screwed up.

Sorry if I sound irritated but this isn't the first time someone has posted an OP like this instead of actually asking simply: "Can someone help me figure this out/What should I be doing?"

With Ness downthrow DI up and towards , watch out tho good Ness players will read and try to uair instead, that is air dodgeable as well

Mario I usually SDI down and shield/roll/rush coil out of his utilts. If I'm higher ish percent it's mostly DI mixups

Shiek howevr.. FTilt/fair spam is justsafe in general
