Thoughts on the concept of "Game of the Year"?

i have always thought that Game of the Year has always brought out the worst in people around the internet. Rather than people having their own opinions on what they believe is Game of the Year everyone is constantly being nasty about it. Its like no one can just like a game now it has to be "GOTY" material in order to even give it the time of day. I see Wicther 3, MGSV, Bloodborne, etc fanboys constantly go off on others for having a differing opinion. Its okay to disagree on what is GOTY to ones self but they don't have to belittle others for thinking differently.

So do you guys feel the same way? Do you think people just use the GAME OF THE YEAR to validate why they think the game they like is better than others? Or am i just making a big deal out of nothing haha

I think awards like these simplify things too much. Much like reviews with scores at the end of them, rarely does assigning one spur much discussion.

Better, I think, would be to do an awards series that nominates games for each category but does not pick a winner. That way, people will remember all of them instead of focusing on only #1.

I agree! Its better to celebrate the awesome games that came out this year! Why just focus on one like you said. Rather than "Game of the Year" it should be "Games of the Year" or something like that.

I'm totally down with having an awards show for video games, especially as a way to show the devs of these games how much we appreciate their work. But the culture surrounding it is too juvenile for it to be taken seriously.

I dunno man. Eveyone is always at each others throats for the dumbest reasons.

I prefer Top 5 or Top 10 of the year, there's room for a larger variety of genres instead of deeming one game/one genre the sole thing worth talking about of the entire year.

I don't think there's one true GOTY for every year. I think its all up to the type of person. People who prefer PlayStation would naturally choose a PlayStation game for their GOTY, and people who prefer Nintendo would naturally choose a Wii U or 3DS game for their GOTY. Same goes for people who like Microsoft or PC or Apple.

GOTY is stupid. There are so many sites that pick their own GOTY so that companies can release a GOTY version of their game to make more money.

I feel like Undertale has the most to gain from winning the award at this point. Melee's been around for 14 years and it's growth likely won't be affected one way or the other. I don't know if Undertale will have the same following in 5 years, so this could be its chance to cement itself as a community, or at least validate itself. Obviously OOT and SMRPG have been around for a long time as well, so they'll have more opportunities to win similar titles anyway.

Yeah, basically GOTY matters to a handful of people, but nobody cares a week later.
