So, Brawl is the most under-appreciated game in the series, due to a few critical flaws that led to a poor competitive scene. But it was still really fun. The Brawl at SSC was a great example of how it could even be fun competitively. So, ITT we mourn its passing by listing things that we miss from Brawl.
- Wario's side smash. It was iconic. Why, Sakurai? Why did you kill it? It just doesn't make sense. Wario Land seems to be another one of those series that Sakurai has an inexplicable grudge against.
- Items. They were actually really fun in Brawl. It was the only game where my casual play was almost exclusively with items on.
- Items. Like ZSS's armor pieces, and Wario's bike pieces. Meanwhile, Peach takes longer to pluck her turnips and can't spawn beam swords. It's like they made a conscious decision to screw over items. (Random ssb4 complaint: Mega Man's metal blade disappears at random. Couldn't they at least make it consistent? It's really, really annoying.)
- I dislike rage. I just don't like it as a mechanic. It would be cool if they made it exclusive to certain characters who benefit most from it, but some characters would rather not have rage, because it screws with their combos. Like Bowser. Give Bowser rage, but not Luigi. Luigi's never been angry in his life.
- Fun stage gimmicks. Okay, most of them were terrible, but some were really fun. Like Pirate Ship. (Oy my god, remember when the catapult would launch a soccer ball and it would just murder somebody. So much fun.) Now, no stage gimmicks are good, and otherwise great stages like Magicant and Wily Castle are ruined by them. Seriously, imagine how great those stages would be without the hazards. Magicant would be the best stage in the series and people would be clamoring for it to be added to the Wii U via DLC.
- I miss early KOs. SSB4 is just so forgiving. Brawl was super slow paced in high-level competitive play because people would play lame and camp the ledge, but it was actually a lot easier to get the KO in casual play. They generally nerfed damage output, while buffing recoveries, and removing ledge-hogging. Why? 2 stock matches get boring.
- Okay, as much as I played the Ice Climbers, they were pretty lame. But Snake and Wolf were cool and unique. (Yes, Wolf was unique. No idea how anybody ever considered him a clone.)
- Mr. Game & Watch isn't nearly as cool as he used to be. I prefer his new aesthetics, and the d-tilt windbox is awesome, as is not having to pull dummy hammers, but he's a lot worse off for the most part. They nerfed his smash attacks like crazy, they removed bucket braking (maybe that was more of a bug-fix, but still), and they gave him more landing lag on all of his aerials except for f-air, which was still nerfed in damage.
- Charizard was always my least favorite of the three starter pokemon. Which sucks because nintendo has shown him favoritism due to his popularity. He's the only one of the three in SSB4, he's the only one with a mega-evolution, (not that I bother playing new pokemon games....) and he's the only one who isn't in his first evolution. When someone told me that the new smash game removed all transformations and gave people separate character slots, I thought it was awesome, because I could just play Squirtle or Ivysaur without having to play Charizard. They neglected to mention that some characters were just cut.
- I miss the old shield mechanics. Shields used to drain way, way faster. All of the bonus shield damage in this game hardly matters, considering how fast they regenerate.
- Did they make teching easier? It seems a lot easier, and I don't like it. It shouldn't be so easy to tech stage spikes. A player as bad as me shouldn't be able to do it so often.
- Air dodges are so good now. I think I read somewhere that the worst air dodge in SSB4 is better than the best in Brawl.
