Ok, I'm not talking about 3rd party characters or anything like that. I'm talking about a way to figure out what a possible way to determine most of the remaining character are. Take a look at this:
In, Super Smash Brothers 64, the first 8 characters (the starting characters) were Mario, Link, Fox, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Pikachu, Samus and Yoshi. The 4 secret characters were Ness, Luigi, Capt. Falcon and Jiggly Puff.
Total characters: 12

Secrets characters included Luigi and Jiggly Puff, which recalled all 12 members of SSB 64, but also added Peach, the Ice Climbers, Bowser, Zelda/Sheik as starting characters. Total of 16 characters so far. Other secret characters were MewTwo, Pichu, Dr. Mario, Falco, Marth, Roy, Mr. Game & Watch, Gannondorf and Young Link.

Now things get interesting. We know the new characters are Sonic, Snake, Diddy Kong, Pokemon Trainer, MetaKnight, Ike, Zero Suit Samus (Zamus), Lucas, Pit, and Wario. But I have seen a pattern and I like to show it to you guys. The character roster has doubled with each new game, so it doesn't seem ridiculous to consider a 50 man roster, but for the sake of things, we'll stick with 40. If this were the case, we could argue for 16 starting characters. My proposed 13-16 starting characters are:

You'll note that Samus/Zamus is one character and not in the new characters list below. This is because I believe her to replace the Zelda/Sheik team. This believe stems off the fact that since Link was re-done to look similar to his TP game, Zelda should follow the same pattern and rely more on her magic than Sheik form. Also, Zamus cannot be too much of a secret since she is acquired after Full Suit Samus finishes her final smash. But she takes over as the 2-in-1 character of Brawl.
