Theory about Sakurai's Customization

Bump my post in new page.

I'm sure that we know that Sakurai mentioned customizations in the game, but he wouldn't elaborating what it is for. I think I might figure it out however I could be wrong or it could be something else.

Look at what he said,

siliconera said:
Speaking with Gamespot, Sakurai provided a single hint as to how your customization in the 3DS game could potentially affect your characters. “Perhaps the best way to think of it is: it’s not the strength of the attacks that change—their power—but the directionality of those attacks will change with customization,” Sakurai shared.
IGN said:
“We’re planning for a level of customization to some degree and in some form,” Sakurai acknowledged. “It’s not completely decided at this point. But it’s very important to point out that we do this in a careful way that doesn’t affect the strength and balance of the characters. One thing we’d like to do is to be able to customize the direction of attacks. But not give characters a stronger jump or a stronger or weaker attack. You can consider customizations like that possible.”
Customize direction of attacks, so I would like to think that we can add or remove the platforms to the stage nor we can make our decision to pick one out of two or three static layouts that Sakurai have developed for us to pick. It would change the directions of our attacks because the platforms would be there to support specific characters. For example, there are several characters that would be good with platforms being there or not.

We know how much Sakurai make his messages vague, so we would have hard time to figure out what he planned to do but I think I figured it out. I think what he teased is that we might able to customizing the stages to suit our preferences. I'm not talking about stage builders, but I'm talking how we can change the layouts of platforms, getting rid of platforms, etc. I would rather to believe that we can make decision to pick one of few static layouts per stage or so.

It's just theory right now, but I think I may found few evidences to support my theory however it's possible that we could have Battlefield I and Battlefield II; and Smashville I and Smashville II.

Warning: I could be wrong for many reasons.
1) I might be over-speculating.
2) the game is in early development and
3) It's possible that we are getting Smashville I and II and Battlefield I and II.
4) It's possible that platforms could appear and disappear.
5) Don't expect me to list every reasons on the list. :p

Example 1:

Look at Wii Fit's Training Room, we noticed that we have two different layouts.

Example 2:
Look at Battlefield. Most of time we know that we have three platforms on the stage but someone pointed it out that he saw same stage without platform. However it's possible that it could be developer's testing stage.

Example 3:
Animal Crossing, we know that we have two backgrounds so we don't know how it work yet. It's possible that we could have "Spear Pillar" decision-making where they would decide to assign stages/legendary pokemon to us.

What do you think?

But what does the platforms have to do with the "directionality of attacks"?

And I could argue that the Wii Fit stage would be boring with just 3 platforms high in the air or in the middle of the air,so they could be moving from time to time.

LOL, how does Sakurai's comment lead you to think about stages? No one knows what the customization will be but we would be silly to think the customization he was talking will be about the stages.

"Customize direction of attacks, so I would like to think that we can add or remove the platforms to the stage..."

....what...?

Perhaps they will get rid of being able to 'angle' certain attacks up or down and instead use those directions for customization. Think Samus's f-smash and Ganon's f-smash. That sort of thing.

Yeah, I doubt that "directionality" has anything to do with stages. But if I had to take a guess on the matter...

Because Smash is primarily aimed at casual players, the custom "directionality" must be immediately apparent, even for a newbie. This makes it less likely to be something subtle like literally tweaking the direction in which your attacks send the opponent. Casuals won't be impressed by Fox's upsmash knocking people sideways instead of up. In that case, we're left with two options:

Directionality could refer to art direction. Players could change the cosmetic effects of their characters' attacks and make them look more badass.

Or, we could potentially choose between two versions of an attack that are clearly different from each other. For example, Mario players could pick the Tornado for his Down B instead of the FLUDD. Could be a bit harder to balance, but that's where Namco comes in.

While I don't think the customazation has to do anything with stages, as it is supposed to affect the characters themselves, I am intrigued by the different captures of those stages. And all of the stages you have pics of look like they belong to the Wii-U version so I do wonder why some have platoforms and why others lack platform(s). o.o

Don't need to be **** about it with your capital LOL. I'm bringing a possibilities to the table, but if you take those two quotes away then can you explain about the stages? Why would we see two different layout of same stage as I provided the picture.

I know it's more likely that no platform battlefield is more likely to be test stage for Sakurai, but who know.

Yeah, probably.

Yeah, I'm concerned about latter one due to balance issues so I hope that it would be first one.

Like I said to you in another forum I don't think the customization deals with platforms, not in a character specific way, but I do think you are on to something with customizable platforms.

It really does appear as if we get platform and platformless stages. Though I figure it would just be the stages own toggle to remove or add when wanted.

Directionality is such a weird word to use for anything really and judging by his comments about not giving better jumps or stronger/weaker attacks, I'm betting they will be different attacks with the exact same utility like normal arrows or fire arrows for Link. Something that would really customize your character without actually changing the game.

It's an acronym of course I'm going to capitalize it. Here are my explanations for the stages. For the animal crossing stage its pretty obvious it could be a delphino plaza sort of stage, look at the background. For the training room it could be moving platforms. For the BF without the platforms it could just be used for to show purposes, as in to show how characters work or something. Seriously though he said directions of attacks, how do you get platforms out of that statement? Stages are supposed to be unique and there will be stages like F-Zero's that will make the platforms usless. ugh... I don't know your idea is still silly to me.

It's possible but we will see when we get more trailers, but my idea don't really applies to ALL stages. At least, I don't think it would apply to moving stages.

Doesn't that blow that idea out of the picture then? If you can't do your idea of "directional attacks" for all stages the idea is basically gone... We know Sakurai is trying hard on this idea so I doubt he will make an idea of customization exclusive to certain stages.

I kind of like the second idea, where you can choose what attack you want. That could work out as long as it balances properly. With the pros and cons of each attack deliberately catering to a certain type or style of a player. It'd be kind of like choosing a main.....within a main.

We might get a "day/night" feature where we can choose what area of the stage you want to be in.

If we look at "Battle field" or what looks like Battle field, there in the background, are multiple landmarks that look like you can play on them. In sense, we might be able to choose them.

Rethinking it,I still don't see why directionality of attacks = platforms,BUT,you got me wondering something.

I'm not just thinking that we could customise stages or something, but if we could, these pictures are from the Wii U version, but customisation is on the 3DS.

I'm hoping it is a cosmetic feature, like changing the color or adding special effects like sparks to the attack.
However I'm having a feeling that the moves themselves will actually be changed to be stronger in one aspect, but weaker in another.
Like Fox's Blaster, it fires quick but has no knockback. You could customize it to have knockback, but fire slower. Or you could customize it to fire 3 quick bursts that go in different angles, but have a short range.

If you took directionality literally, then you would have vertical, horizontal, and diagonal. Imagine DK punching in any direction or Samus shooting at different angles. Similar to Marvel vs. Capcom fighters having three different attacks which are the same thing but in different directions. I sure wouldn't mind playing around with Pikachu's thunderbolt...

As for those platforms, they're intriguing but just not convincing enough. Two Smashville backgrounds, a new Wii Fit stage, and Battlefield being used to show off Mega Man isn't good enough evidence for a likely theory.
