I've only recently got into the competitive Melee scene from the stony lonesome that is Brawl around 8 months ago. These 8 months have been a relatively good time. I went through my early stage of playing my childhood main (Ness) to my getting my first taste of competitive on a relatively good character (Peach) to settling into my full and final love (Captain Falcon). I love Captain Falcon, his play style is so fluid, energetic, stylish and most importantly fun. I want to be one of the best, just like everyone else.

As it happens with everyone, I developed very quickly as I picked the game up. There is so much to learn about, so much to understand and develop. The sky always feels like the limit. I've net-played, practiced combo game and stage comfort on 20XX. I've worked on understanding matchups and done my best to work toward that information. I got to tournaments even though I know I'll lose, just to play friendlies and the few matches I get. I've tried very hard, and I know that doesn't mean a lot to you guys but I can't say I've but this degree of footwork into any game that I've played.

Recently I've started to realize my progress is stagnating. There is less new things for me to realize and what is left to implement feels too challenging. My fingers feel too slow and my time feels like its dwindling with work and school operating simultaneously in the background. Its frustrating, extremely so. I don't like seeing my hobby bring me this amount of anger because in my heart that's what the opposite of a hobby should be. Real life should be the ****ty one, not my fun personal time.

Anyways, without gabbing too much more I'm wondering how you guys develop through this. Tips, tricks, etc.
I'm still going to keep trying, I just need to hear from the other side.

I find it generally helpful to watch combo videos on a daily basis, and matches on a weekly or daily basis. (Which ends up being watching Mew2King's Marth for me.)

After even a month of this, I started developing Mew2King's good habits.

Other than I studied (and still study.) frame data and calculate that into actual time and FPS. After I did this, I transferred that knowledge into gameplay and calculations of what I could do against my opponent that would be most effective to their last action.

The only wall I run into right now is the mental side of the game. (Which is generally just adapting for me.) for adaptation, I just keep playing against skilled players and practicing my adaptation against them.

One of the primary tricks I used for gaining in finger speed was picking up Fox as a main for a time. Also, perfecting the Shino Stall as Sheik helped.

I hope some, or all of this was at least a little helpful to you!

When you start learning something, there's everything about it to learn, including the easy stuff. Now that you've learned most of the easy stuff, most of what's left is the hard stuff. There are still a lot of easy to perform stuff in the game. You're going to need real experience to learn it. It can't be done by practicing alone. If your fingers feel too slow, you could switch to an easier character to stay in control of yourself better

This sounds unhealthy. Might you be taking the game too far in the wrong direction?

I just play the game with friends because it's fun. That's it

I am only 13 and it's summer. Can't relate to the whole work and school thing, but try to relax during your free time and clear your mind of anything stressful and focus on the game. Try learning some frame data and do harder tech, the more you know, the better you get.
