People, I actually unlocked Sonic and Tails in Melee! Here's how to actually unlock them: Collect all trophies, complete classic mode with all characters, beat Master hand and Crazy Hand 500 times, and play Marth voice "Let's dance" bit from the soundtrack 666 times and beat classic mode as Dr Mario 5 more times, then the screen says two challengers approaching! Then Sonic and Tails appears on the Dreamland as you play Dr Mario. Then you unlocked Sonic and Tails! Here's proof!
