I posted this on reddit and figured I should post it here as well

First to clear some things up!
This is NOT a Smoothlander Heavy Gravity post. I know all about it. I think it was a cool idea but in the end, it just doesn't work in my opinion.

Please don't come here to say "Stop trying to make the game like Melee, Smash 4 should be its own game!" This is just being close minded. I play Smash 4 but I still respect the hell out of Melee. How could you not? It is a game that was released about 14 years ago, and is going stronger than ever. I think Melee had a lot of things that are worth replicating, so please, at least TRY this before you make your decision on whether to completely blow it off and judge it negatively.

Okay now for the actual post. Here are the items required, along with their stats, and overall total when combined.

Smooth Lander Brawn Badge +36a/-35d/0s

Default Agility Badge -14a/0d/+21s unlocked by default

Default Protection Badge 0a/+21d/-14s unlocked by default

Total: +22a/-14d/+7s

As mentioned above, both the Protection and Agility Badge is already in yours, and everyone else's game, by default, with the exact same stats. Unlocking the Smoothlander badge is very simple.

How to/easiest method:
• complete 1 round of Crazy orders as villager
or
• complete 100 man smash

Doing one of these will give you a golden hammer, which you can then use to automatically complete the challenge A7 that can be found at the main menu under "challenges". Now you have everything you need! At most, this takes about 5 minutes to unlock.

Now, what exactly does the Smoothlander Badge do? You probably already know that it reduces landing lag off all aerial moves, but by how much?

If you look at Mario's nair, it has 10 frames of landing lag. With Smoothlander (SL) it would reduce it down to 7 frames or in other words a 7th of what it used to be.

Here, you can find your character and all of their normal landing lag frame data

http://smashboards.com/forums/wii-u-3ds-character-discussion.291/

To find the difference SL makes for your character/main, take your your landing lag frame number "x" and plug it in to this equation. Wtf math?! It's not too bad
Ps. I suck at math, and I'm sure there's an easier to figure this out but this is just what I came up with.

( x / 10 ) • 7 = y

For ex. Mario's nair:

10 / 10 = 1 1 • 7 = 7

Mario's nair equals 7 frames with SL.

If your number comes out to be a decimal, then you round up
Mario's uair:

( 12 / 10 ) • 7 = 8.4

So his uair would be 9 frames with SL

Stat Difference.
With both characters are equipped with the SL setup, it increases your attack about 1/3. So an attack that did 10% will now do ~13% and an attack that did 30% will now do ~40% (it goes into a very specific decimal that I'm not sure of)

That's pretty much wraps everything up, the rest is just playing matches and enjoying it. It looks like a great opportunity to expand the game in a new and undiscovered direction.
I know this will open up a few concerns, but hopefully I can answer them or clear things up.

1) Will this completely unbalance the roster?
I believe Smash 4 has the most balanced roster we have ever gotten but it still has some major imbalances. So how much harm will SL actually do to character balance? It's really up to your personal opinion, but how much can this really change the balance? SL could even make it even more balanced, giving characters like bowser a chance, changing his bair of 40 frames down to 28. This question and answer relies entirely on experimenting and simply playing matches with SL equipped. I can not stress how important that is.

2) "I still think this is stupid, why change the game?"
If you're still not on board to even give this a try, that's up to you, and you already know that. All I can say is that I wish you would've given it a chance before turning it down.

3) "How can I practice against people? You can't use equipment on for glory."
No you cannot, but you would practice the same way people are practicing with custom moves on now. I don't know how to setup a group on Smashladder for SL but if anyone that is willing to do that would be AWESOME!

4) "Why only use 1 SL Badge? Or any other equipment?"
This is by far the easiest to unlock along with being the most balanced. Yes, stacking equipment with the same bonus effects stack up, but with the game is now, IT IS IMPOSSIBLE to make person to person completely balanced with everyone having their own custom equipment. Trust me, don't even try. As far as other equipment with other bonus effects, again, it won't work. Everyone would have to grind for equipment on top of trying to get the same stats, it would be impossible. The equipment I chose takes ~5mins to unlock, everyone would have the same stats, and you're good to go.

Thank you! Thank you! THANK YOU! For taking the time to check this out and giving it a read. If you have any questions PLEASE ASK! I'll try and clarify. I'm down for discussion as well. That's how stuff like this can grow, by just talking about it. One of the best things you do right now is to go play a match with this setup, right now! Come back a post a recording or give some input on what you thought. Thanks again!

TL:DR you should read it ;)

No I won't...

I think less landing lag would help the game immensely, but the game would have to be balanced around it. You can't just change a few attributes and call it a day, that's just bad game design. You have to see how everything affects each other, and even the smallest change can make a huge difference, many times unwanted. Why do you think replays break after patches?

That, and I also don't really like equipment for comp. play.

Please don't come here to say "Stop trying to make the game like Melee, Smash 4 should be its own game!" This is just being close minded.
What is close-minded about wanting the game to stand alone on its own merits, rather than be compared and absorbed into its predecessor? As an opposition, wouldn't you say it can be rather close-minded to hold Melee to such an esteem that other games need to be more like it?

This is all based off default, anyone-can-obtain equipment, which is good... but it still has problems of accessibility. Specifically, if the equipment used was already consumed somehow, either by selling or feeding an Amiibo. Let's say the Smash world agrees that this is the best possible way to play and Smoothlander Smash is now the base ruleset. Would people unfortunate enough to have lost their equipment before then just out of luck?

Yes, tournaments and such would obviously have it provided, but for personal use (say, playing online with people or even just alone for practice), they have no way to play using the accepted settings. Like, for myself, I'm pretty sure I've already lost that default gear, so I don't think I can even try this style out.

1) Will this completely unbalance the roster?

I can't help but notice you typed a lot here, but only maybe 2 sentences out of your six actually went after the question directly, which amounted to "I dunno, I guess we'll find out by trying it".

4) "Why only use 1 SL Badge? Or any other equipment?"
This is by far the easiest to unlock along with being the most balanced.
You can't claim this setting is the most balanced when, according to your response to question 1, you don't know how it'll affect balance in the first place. Most balanced in regards to equipment availability, sure, but that is about the only "balanced" thing about it we have confirmed.

I don't find this post convincing, if it was trying to sell me on the concept. It's an interesting enough idea for a style of play, but I don't see any strong reasons presented to encourage me to take it up. Yes, Smoothlander makes landing lag shorter... but why do I want to value that? What makes that important enough for me to start doing this? When your answer to how it'll impact game balance - the Major Question to any gameplay change/approach - is a shrug and "we'll find out", what is there to have me eager to take the first step?

It's value; as I'm sure you already know; is that it allows the game to become faster paced, more offensive, and combo based, which for me is a plus. Or would be had the game been balanced around it. I'll admit, it probably won't change all that much in regards to balance, but I'd much rather the game was naturally that way rather than resorting to equipment.

Thanks for taking the time to explain this.

Does it? It has the potential to cause faster, more offensive and combo-based gameplay, but it's not clear if that'll actually be the case, since a lot more factors than just landing lag go into those things. Unless we're certain about the outcome, we're back to the question 1 answer of "Well, I dunno, we'll find out I guess".

Though, I'm not sure I think those things are intrinsically good in the first place, or that Smash 4 has a lack of them and needs more.

I'd much rather the game was naturally that way rather than resorting to equipment.
What's unnatural about using equipment, especially this set, which looks to be as universal as equipment can get? What makes it any different in natural-ness than toggling items, stock vs. time, choice of stage, or any of the other adjustables the game offers?

It's less of a "It will" and more of a "we have reason to believe." Without L-Cancel, Melee is actually a fairly slow game, once you add L-Cancel the game becomes faster and moves that wouldn't have linked before are able to now. Project M and 64 are pretty much the same way. That's three games where reducing landing lag has resulted in a faster, combo-oriented game. Therefore it's pretty reasonable to believe Smoothlander would do the same.

Natural wasn't the best word, I just couldn't think of anything at the time. I really don't enjoy equipment.
