-Preface-

Ever wanted to dance across Final Destination like Michael Jackson? Or maybe run backwards all over Smashville? Then the Simplified Moonwalk is for you. I'm not sure if this is a widely known technique (and if there is a thread on this already please link to it), but within my group of friends no one knew anything about it. Basically, what this technique does is let anybody with a little rhythm and a Gamecube Controller execute Moonwalks PERFECTLY 100% of the time.

-Input-

To start off you're gonna hold down the A button for as long as this technique is being performed, as it's the reason this works at all in the first place. Now you're gonna do the moonwalking motion as you normally would, but while you're in the initial dash animation flick the C-Stick forwards (that being the direction in which you're facing). This will cause you to perform another moonwalk instantly and without even moving your analog stick (which at this point should be facing the direction you intend to moonwalk). Repeatedly flick the C-Stick forwards to continue moonwalking.

Here's the input again using buttons instead (Facing Right):

[collapse=Input With Buttons]

:GCA: (Hold) --> :GCL::GCDL::GCD: --> :GCCL:
[/collapse]

-Timing-

The rhythm with which you flick the C-Stick will depend on your character, because the time during which you can do it depends on how long your character's dash animation is. For example, with Sonic you have the longest window with about 2/3s of a second (38 frames to be exact) to flick the C-Stick before you'll end your moonwalk and return to standing position. Doing it with someone with a shorter dash animation, Luigi, for instance would have less time at about 1/3 of a second (22 frames exactly). Someone like Mr. Game & Watch would give even less time at about 1/4 of a second (18 frames exactly).

Yeah I was the first to show and popularize it, with presumably no videos or posts of the technique prior to this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjpvlB8pMPQ

Quickly there became many copy-cat videos from reddit gypsies without any reference to it

The original creator was 1/3 me, and 2/3 high people somewhere in Canada; the origin will remain a secret

I'll add that to the original post then, thank you for clearing that up.

How is trying to be MJ gonna help you in a match? Really, is there any PRACTICAL use of this, other then styling? I see little point of this thread otherwise, especially if it's been known for the longest time.

Never once did I say that this is meant to be used during a match. I said it was for if you "wanted to dance across Final Destination like Michael Jackson." However, if this ever DID see use during a match, you could use it like a taunt to paralyze your opponents with fear get your opponent to attack you. Maybe you could use it as a fake dash at your opponent to bait out an attack? If you really wanted to you could probably find a way to use it other than stylishly grabbing ledges.

Like a lot of info for PM, this isn't common or as easy to find as it should be. I've known about this ages... but I lurk too much.

More threads like this are needed. The more stickied threads the better. As a Falcon player, I can say that the unlimited moonwalk has helped me countless times.

Thank you for helping other players.

I switched my attack button to R and hold down R and the control stick in one direction but when I flick the C-Stick, my character charges a F-Smash.

What am I doing wrong?

You have to do one actual moonwalk input (forward, down, back) first, then rhythmically flick the c-stick. The timing is different for every character.

Thanks, I wanted to pick up this technique for :mewtwopm: so I watched the video from SpiderMad and I got it down. Went ahead trying with :falcon::ganondorf: (got it down), :sonic::lucario: (didn't get it, but testifies that timing is different for all characters), and :marth:(for some reason I was going forward).

I've been looking how to moonwalk for a while with Mewtwo and this thread really helped.

Your not being able to actually go backwards with Marth is because he doesn't have an actual moonwalk. While all characters can reenter their dash animations through this technique, only some are actually able to moonwalk. Notable characters that cannot moonwalk are Marth, Lucas, and Olimar though there are more.

Fox, Falco, Wolf, and Samus can all MW with or without the technique
Oh can they? Couldn't get it to work in my testing, they all just ran forward. Do they have to do it for certain amount of time first before it actually sends them back? I noticed that Luigi, G&W, MK (kinda), and Roy behave this way for reasons I don't understand. Is it something to do with their dash acceleration speeds?
