The Purpose of "Wiggling Out"

I've heard people talking about wiggling out of hitstun, but I haven't been able to find much scientific information on what is happening. From what I understand, while in hitstun you can "wiggle" the control stick, something like a dash dance, which then allows you to airdodge after hitstun ends. Does this actually reduce the amount of hitstun you suffer from an attack, like mashing out of a grab? What state does wiggling out put your character in? Do you still have to tech after wiggling out? What options other than airdodge (if any) does wiggling out open up for you? Just hoping to understand the mechanic on a deeper level and haven't been able to find anything solid yet.

Wiggling the stick doesn't make you get out of hitstun quicker. Performing a single smash input on the control stick during tumble (the state you enter after histun if the move you were hit by deals greater than 80 units of knockback) gets you out of tumble and puts you into Fall (the normal falling state during which you are free to act, as the name implies). Wiggling the stick gives you repeated smash inputs, so that you'll end up doing a smash input at approximately the right time to break out even if you don't know exactly when you are or will be in tumble.

You can break tumble with a move or jump too, which is why you see people using aerials which can't hit anything after being knocked offstage. Wiggling the stick interferes with your aerial drift (which is important when you're recovering, especially), so you shouldn't do it. If you want to keep drifting in one direction and you can't use an aerial or jump to break out, then you can tap in only one direction direction to get slightly better drift than you do when you're wiggling back and forth.

Awesome, just what I was looking for. Thanks a lot, man.
