How Long Have I Been Asleep?
As we all know, the most dreaded roster (although I liked it, and now love it) alive became a reality today. What is worse off for some people is the fact that after all this time and all this manpower we ended up with 35 characters and still have clones, and in the case of Fox, Falco and Wolf; only slight variations of the three.
There are some things that I can point out that attributed to this problem we have now.
1: The DOJO - The problem was the characters they revealed on the DOJO, I GUARANTEE you if half of the newcomers we knew about like Sonic, Olimar, DDD, and Pokemon Trainer would have been kept a secret. We probably would not have half the reaction we have now.
2: The Starting Roster - They put way to many of the new characters in the starting roster, this point goes hand-and-hand with point one. They would have been better of using more veterans than using the more unique newcomers/
3: Subspace Emissary - This is probably the BIGGEST reason the roster turned out the way it did, as everyone can see, there was so much work that went into SSE that it is incredible. Unfortunately though it had a cost, you see the more characters they had, the more work that would go into creating the movie sequences and the plot. So they probably tried to keep as little as possible, but yet creating as many as possible. So it was quite a strange priority, but one in the end that may have shifted the development eye.
4: Wi-Fi - This again is one of the main things contributing to the "Melee roster 2.0," along side SSE it probably took a lot of work to develop and implement, and since Nintendo is new to the whole online buisness. It probably took them a long time to create an effective and effective online mode; and this was probably no easy task.
5: Mismanaged Priorities - As we have heard Sakurai many times say for the past time "I may have gone overboard' and that is true, he went overboard on the wrong things. He implemented things that are spectacular, but uneccesary; like Masterpieces, Chronicle, and the influx of a massive amount of trophies, music and stickers. While I love collectibles and love the roster, unfortunately for the people that do not play this game for collectibles, this was a bad thing.
6: More Emphasis on New Players - I am going to go ahead and say this, this was not a game focused exclusively for the people that are already Smash fans. This game was made for new players, no you and I reading this; that is why they can get away with half the veterans being unlockables and with few new characters left. Most people picking up this game will not have played Melee, or at least never owned it; so it a more "newbie" game this time around.
So far that is all I can come up with, I am extremely happy with the way this game turned out, even in the absence of characters I wanted and finding out that there are still some clones. I am happy though and am entirely grateful to Sakurai for the work he has put in, and the end result; I just wish I could play the game so that I could experience some of the new players. However, just as with anything else, I will have to wait; I cannot guarantee that my reasons listed were why the roster came out as it did. I am just trying to give an unbiased opinion (being a Smash fan) as of to why this happened.
Now that Brawl is over, I have spoiled myself beyond neccesity, I think I will now take my leave until the release of Brawl in North America. So with that I bid everyone a farewell.
