Alright, I know many of you said you weren't interested but I thought I'd let you all know about it anyways.

I have gone through the trouble of starting a Smash Club at UT. We will be having our first general meeting 11/16/07 (we were going to have it Saturday to allow for the Jester People to do thier thing too and not conflict with that interest until we found out about the tourny in SA on the 17th, so this isn't an attempt to displace any already formed group) 4:30pm to midnight in Welch 3.502. This will most likely be our only projector meeting or whatever this semester for member students and non-member students. The only people that can come (sadly) are UT students.

We will have five consoles (2 wiis, 2 cubes, 1 n64), two projectors, two TV (maybe three) and probably not enough controllers or melee disks (1-2 short) - so bring yours please. If you feel moved by all of our toiling to bring a setup or any piece of a setup, by all means please do. I will also have one pinnacle-pro capture device running for any particularly awesome fight that needs to be recorded.

Since we are the smash club we will also have old school smash if anyone feels the need to play reminisce or whatever. We will discuss the functions and so forth of the club around 6pm and again at 8pm. Tell all of your UT friends and bring whoever you like. This will be for both casual players and serious/hardcore players too. Oh yea, we will be directly recording any important 1v1s.

PLEASE EMAIL HERE: ut.smash.club@gmail.com if you are interested in joining and you are a UT Student or Faculty.

While I do like that you'll be recording things, what I don't understand is why you've gone to the effort of renting a place, for money, which is out of the way for most people and troublesome to reach with equipment like TVs, and put your meetings on Fridays, which obviously conflicts with the Smash gatherings which have been occurring regularly for the last 2 years or so. I'm not complaining, I just don't see the logic here. I generally have 2-3 TVs in my room, which are carried to the basement of Jester every Friday, and that already matches the number of TVs you have, only it's much closer and people already know to meet there and it's free. So recording matches is a potential advantage, but that's the only one I see.

How late can you guys stay in Welch? How big is the room you're using? Have you checked to make sure that it has enough outlets for plugging in your equipment?

yea - man - it was kinda funny

We were going to be doing it on Saturday because I know you guys are doing your thing in Jester, but then we found out about the tourny in SA on Saturday and pushed it up to Friday. Normally we'll be doing it on Saturdays. It was not our intent at all to conflict with your all's already running and working system. If you all decide to stop by, great, if not well I hope you all have fun smashing in Jester. Please don't think we are trying to displace the jester thing or compete with it - that is stupid, you can look on the University of Texas thread - we were originally setup to have this on Saturday night. Smash within UT shouldn't be cut throat and saying oh my thing is better than yours so you should come to my thing or whatever - that is not what we are trying to do. We just don't think having two options is a bad thing. If no one comes and it is just me and my friends ... well then sweet - we get to play on projectors all to ourselves.

As for the logic:

1) Projectors are good, big is good - I like playing on the big screens - it is pretty sweet, if I recall on average our screens are bigger than yours (not including the projectors).
2) This semester membership is free too, but the rooms do cost a little money and so next semester we will be issuing a $5/year membership fee. I don't think it is really that much to ask at for a year's worth of big screen and organized events - including outdoor activities and presentations.
3) Also don't take this the wrong way but some of the people that go to Jester can really put off some new players and I think smash is part of the "college experience" (or life) and so I thought it'd be good to also have an environment that aims at doing less of that while catering to those that could put off new comers. I really really love this game and I'd like other people who are interested to be able to check it out without hesitations.
4) I don't think going to welch is that far for smash on the big screen.
5) We actually can get 5 different melees running (or we have that potential). The two projector screens can be split (or at least I believe so - every time I try to stop by and mess with it a class is being had - i know bur 106 can be) and we have 3 tvs ... so I count 5 tvs, and we are just starting and it is my hope some people will feel interested in helping bringing setups and I may perhaps get more TVs ... you never know.

We can stay till midnight this time, I think we can get it as late as 1 friday night and 2 saturday. I have enough power strips to hold the systems, and I do believe there are enough outlets. Welch 3.502 has an outdoor entrance so it is really great for out late night meetings. The room seats 250+ so there will be plenty of room for everyone. If you decide to come and want me to record your match in HD please bring a large USB drive to take your files with you on, because I won't keep them on my comp and up load as they get very big very fast.

I hope some of you feel inclined to stop by even if it is only this once. After all if we love smash too you're bound to have some fun :)

I think I will stop by at some point on that day, to see how things are going. I can't say when exactly or for how long, but I'll get in a match or three, I expect. I'll attempt to drag some others with me, maybe.

Well certain do as you wish. We don't mean to disrupt the already going Smash Fridays in Jester, but we decided it'd be certain foolish to schedule Smash in the same time frame as a near by tournament. It'd be cool if any of you all decided you wanted to stop by.

You might consider not changing your name from that just because people are going to think you are married to KishPrime or something.

Projectors are bad news, they lag like hell. There's a reason we all play on 20" tubes.
Conflicting with the "Jester crowd" (a.k.a. people that go to and occasionally win tournaments) is probably the worst idea though.

Sorry about the negativity, I'm just saying we already have a pretty well-established albeit non-official smash club. The only reason we aren't growing is because TVs and outlets are hard to find in great numbers and quite a few of us are getting older and leaving or being busy all the time.

*sigh*

look dude - I've done my homework, I know what I'm doing and I guess you are trying to help, but the projectors don't lag if you run them through a VCR. They only lag if you run the A/V signal through the computer, which we will not be doing. So we can use the projectors lag free!

If you had read the posts before hand you would have known that I'm not trying to "conflict" with (a word we both used in prior posts in describing) the Jester crowd, it is just how it worked out. We put it on Friday because of the SA tournament that weekend.

We will normally being doing this on Saturdays so if anyone wants to go to both smashfests, they can. As I said earlier this isn't about trying be better and impose on anyone, if you don't want to come fine. I'm not interested in begging anyone to go. If you want to play smash only in Jester well it is your life and your decision and if you want to only stop by well then great wii'd like to play. I'm not trying to replace anyone - UT is big enough for us to coexist and we will.

EDIT:

I just wanted to let people on here know so that if he/she wanted to come he/she could.

Somehow I didn't quite get around to getting around there today. Nor did I manage to make it to the gym. I think it was because I actually fought people today. Plenty of G&W destruction to go around today. Also, for anyone who was disappointed because my trash-talking skills were lacking today, I blame having a cold and therefore being rather hoarse.

Well looks like we screwed up as most of our flyers say 11/17/07 so we are going to have to change it now to 11/17/07 and not 11/16/07 as we had originally planned ... sorry to any of you that had planned on trying to do both the SOS tournament and this. They had been designed before we had decided to make it Friday so we could go to the tournament.

EDIT:

It has officially been moved to Saturday... sorry for any complication

I think it only works in Firefox and IE right now.

If anyone was wondering, we had a good showing and about 20-25 new people sign up. Smash worked well on the projector (no noticeable lag) and I think everyone had fun (or so I hope). I'll edit back later with a link to a 3 hour video that was recorded off the big screen play if anyone is interested in watching. I don't know who is it in or when/if you are - sorry. If anyone has any questions or an interest in this club and our planned activities, please email us at: Texas.Smash.Club@gmail.com

LIVE FOR THE SWARM!
I was pretty impressed with how well it was organized. The snacks and drinks were a really nice touch, I love food and everything food related gets a thumbs up from me. While the lag was very minimal on the projector, I could still feel it. Nothing too serious though. Good job and keep up the work.

Well thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the food and the setup. We will keep at it.

You could feel the lag... hmm ... you said it was minimal though... I'll look into tweaking it or seeing what I can do to have whatever lag there is reduced. As you play at a higher speed than I do, I can see how you'd notice a very small lag that I could see as human error; but in all honestly do you feel it affected your game play? Would you be deterred from playing "for real" on the projectors? I hope to try out Bur 106 next time (hopefully with more wired controllers with extension cables) as my prior experiences with that room have been better. I believe the Bur 106 computer system is setup better and will hopefully run flawlessly.

Edit:

If it the lag is bad enough that it could really cause a player performance issuses, in your opinion, please tell me - thanks.
