This doesn't quite fit in any game thread, though it might seem so, it's about a group of games.
Anyway, anyone ever play Gears of War and suddenly realize, "Holy crap, it's just like a FPS version of Starcraft!" Seriously. If you look at it enough it makes sense:
Taking into the account that the COG and the Gears are almost exactly the same in power system, means of recruitment, and overall attitude towards things, as well as almost exact physical appearance, to the Terrans and Marines respectively, the similarities between the Locust and the Zerg, both in the nature of certain enemies (Wretches = Zerglings, Nemacyst = Scourges), though, of course, for online play the majority had to be humanoid, and the way the race acts (insectlike (apparently) race controlled by a single hive "Overmind"), the similarities, seen in nearly every scene, are eerily uncanny.
Then again, you might get the same feeling playing Resistance- Fall of Man, where again you fight Pseudo-Zerglings, a hive minded alien race, and, as an addition this time, an assimilation method reminiscent of Infested Terrans.
Bear in mind, I'm not saying that either of these games are carbon copies of Starcraft!,, but I am saying the indeniable truth that there is a subgenre being created that is greatly influenced by it
I have a theory why:
Starcraft: Ghost. When it was being made it was heavily publicized and hightly acclaimed. The game, both in excecution (gameplay) and environment, would have used many of the features seen in GoW and R:FoM, especially in online play. The reason? We all know that, when a new type of game is created, others want to get in on that genre, either to make money (in the eyes of the Company Excecutives), or to test their own creativity/pay homage (in the eyes of the Programmer). GoW was being created as the second game to get into this genre, and, when Ghost was sadly indefinitely suspended (indefinitely, even), it wasn't able to start the genre.
Thus, Gears became the first of the Psychological/Alien/monster/FPS/Squad games, and, as such, defined the genre, while still having it's influence from Starcraft, both Ghost and the original, and, thus, the new subgenre was born, bringing Resistance (which may have had the same production story as Gears, just a few months behind), FEAR, and many new games into the mainstream.
So, anyway, what do you guys think of this? What do you think will happen to the genre? Will it become a full Subgenre right beside Horror FPS?
In closing, here's hoping that the reason they IndefSuspended Ghost was to refine it for the Next-Gens, or, really the Current Gens now.
