I've heard that people think it's a reference to event match 47 from melee but here's what i think.
Currently there are 41 playable characters. They've stated there are five spots left so that brings us up to 46. If they've somehow managed to surpass the limit they set forth previously (6 characters instead of 5) then the number could represent the new number of playable characters (47 as opposed to 46). It could just be a total count of all the icons on the character select screen (random icon included) which would also tally 47 if they were only to add the 5 they said they would. Also if you count the stages on the website there are 42. They could have added 5 more stages in addition to the 5 characters bringing the number for both up to 47. This is just speculation but i think this makes more sense. They knew we would find out about event match 47 and suddenly think skull kid is the newcomer. Then they would throw together some mock trailer showing a skull kid pcs over lucas or something but in actuality the trailer would be revealing the 5 new characters, 5 new stages and 1 new (possible) mode being brought to gold release along with the release date/time frame. Again I'm just speculating here but i really think the whole skull kid majoras mask event match 47 thing is too simple and straight to the point to be something the pmbr would do, but it was just enough to throw the community off.
