Welcome to the Cless Alvein support thread!

Cless Alvein, also known as Cress Albane, is the main protagonist of Tales of Phantasia, the very first installment of the popular Tales RPG series, developed by NamcoBandai. He has since appeared in many other Tales games, either as a playable or supportive character, and is widely considered the mascot of the Tales series. In his respective game, he wields the Eternal Sword, a powerful magickal blade capable of transporting its wielder as well as others through time and space. Though kind at heart, when faced with danger or the task of protecting those dear to him, Cless fights fearlessly and without yield. As a competent and unique swordsman, Cless would make an excellent playable character in Super Smash Bros. 4.

The Main Story:

In Tales of Phantasia, Cless's story begins when he and his best friend Chester set out hunting in the woods. The two eventually catch and kill a wild boar, which they bring home to cook and eat. However...they return home to find that their entire village, Toltus, has been burned down, and all the villagers slain, including Cless's parents and Chester's younger sister. While Chester stays behind to bury and mourn the dead, Cless sets out on a quest for revenge. Cless travels to a village called Euclid to meet his uncle. However, it turns out his uncle has been expecting him, and his uncle betrays him to Mars, the soldier responsible for the destruction of Toltus and the deaths of its residents. Cless is then subdued and kidnapped. The evil soldier Mars takes from Cless a special pendant given to him by his late father, Miguel, then locks Cless in a cell. With the help of a stabbed and dying cellmate, Cless manages to escape his prison. In the dungeon, he finds and frees another prisoner, a girl named Mint, whom tells Cless that her mother was also locked away. Realising that the now dead prisoner whom helped him escape was Mint's mother, Cless lies to Mint in order to protect her feelings, saying that there were no other prisoners. The two then make their way out of the dungeon via the sewers. Cless and Mint eventually rendezvous with Chester, and they eventually meet a wizard named Trinicus, whom tells Cless that he was good friends of his parents, and that they once worked together to seal away a malevolent being. Trinicus is dismayed when he learns that Cless's pendant has been taken away, and then rushes to a nearby cave. Cless and company follow Trinicus to the cave to find Mars there. Using two magickal pendants, one of which was Cless's, Mars unseals the malevolent being Trinicus spoke of. Mars demands the being to grant him power in return for releasing him; however, the being, named Dhaos, simply kills Mars, then turns to Trinicus. Before Dhaos is able to kill everybody else, Trinicus decides to open a time portal leading to the past. While Chester stays with Trinicus to buy time, Cless and Mint are sent into the time portal. Cless and Mint then find themselves several decades into their world's past. It is now up to Cless and Mint to stop Dhaos in the past and save the present...

For fans of Cless, fans of the Tales series, and newcomers alike, feel free to offer your support. All ideas--movesets, stages, music, etc--are welcome. Who knows? Cless's inclusion in Smash 4 might get Tales of Phantasia on the Virtual Console, or more Tales games released or ported on Nintendo platforms. I personally would love to see a Tales of Phantasia HD remake for the Wii U.

♦ Castle of Dhaos:

Dhaos is the main villain of Tales of Phantasia, and his domain, a castle suspended in a space rift in the sky, is the final dungeon Cless and his companions must overcome. In Smash 4, the Tales stage could take place within the castle or on an outside portion of it.

[collapse="Assist Trophy Ideas"][collapse="Chester Burklight"]♦ Chester Burklight:

Chester Burklight is Cless's childhood friend, and the first companion gained in Tales of Phantasia. He is an archer whom hails from Toltus, the same village as Cless. Chester is typically brash, blunt, and arrogant, and has a pride as sharp as his marksmanship. Underneath his tough and hot-headed exterior, however, is a kind and caring heart.
As an Assist Trophy, Chester can run and jump around the stage, firing arrows at opponents. When an opponent is in range, he will either shoot three consecutive shots at the opponent, or one strong shot that will send the opponent flying. Chester's shots would be highly accurate and extremely difficult to dodge.[/collapse]

[collapse="Lloyd Irving"]♦ Lloyd Irving:

Lloyd Irving is the main protagonist of Tales of Symphonia, which was first released on the Nintendo GameCube. The events in Tales of Symphonia take place eons before the events in Tales of Phantasia. Lloyd is a dual-wielding swordsman, raised by a dwarf named Dirk. Despite his lack of knowledge, Lloyd is a very kind, caring, and idealistic--and once he has his mind set, he never hesitates to act upon his ideals.
As an assist trophy, Lloyd can run and jump around the stage. He can use three specific attacks:
1). Lloyd will approach a nearby opponent and perform his signature "Tetra Slash", an attack in which Lloyd slashes the opponent two times, then spins around with his sword arms spread, slashing the opponent two more times.
2). If the opponent is in the air, Lloyd will jump at the opponent and use his "Tiger Rage" attack, in which he slashes the opponent several times.
3). Lloyd will approach a nearby opponent and perfrom a powerful lunging thrust with his sword, sending the opponent flying.[/collapse][/collapse]

Anyhow, I threw together this moveset a few days ago. Virtually all of these moves derive from Tales of Phantasia, Tales of VS, and other Tales games Cless has appeared in. A few of them I made up.

Summary
In terms of weight, mobility, and attack speed, Cless is somewhat of a cross between Marth and Captain Falcon. Unlike Marth and Captain Falcon, however, Cless’s attacks consist of more magickal properties.

1). Regular Attack (or “jab”):

• Jab 1: Cless performs a swift downward vertical slash of his sword. Deals little damage and knockback.
• Jab 2: Cless performs a swift thrust of his sword. Deals little damage and pushes away the opponent a very short distance.

• Rapid Jab (Blade Storm): If the player presses the attack button rapidly, after the first two jabs Cless will perform a flurry of lightning-fast thrusts with his sword. He will continue to do so until either he takes damage or the player ceases to press the attack button.

• Regular Attack (with item): Cless brings the item up in a diagonal swing. Damage, speed, and knockback depends on what item Cless is wielding.

2). Other Moves & Actions:

• Initial Jump Animation & Height: Cless leaps into the air in the same pose as his fighting stance (with his body turned sideways and his sword held close to him, across his front). About as high and far as Marth’s initial jump.

• Initial Jump Animation & Height (backward): Cless leaps backward with his body facing forward and his sword held out in front of him defensively. About as high as Marth’s initial backward jump, but a little farther.

• Secondary Jump Animation & Height: Cless leaps into the air in a quick flip. About the same height and distance as Marth’s secondary jump.

• Secondary Jump Animation & Height (backward): Cless does a quick backflip. About as high as Marth’s secondary jump, but farther.

• Spot Dodge Animation & Duration: Cless leans to the side with his sword arm close to his chest, his sword pointing upward. A little longer than Marth’s spot dodge.

• Air Dodge Animation & Duration: Cless twists his body. About the same duration as Marth’s air dodge.

• Dash Attack: Cless leaps in the air a very short distance whilst performing a strong rising vertical slash that send the enemy flying upwards a short distance. Quick startup.

• Dash Attack (with item): Cless performs a diagonal slash with his sword and then a thrust with whatever item he is wielding. Quick startup.

• Get-up Attack (face up): Cless performs a quick diagonal slash in front of him, then a quick thrust behind him.

• Get-up Attack (face down): Whilst Cless is rising to his feet, he performs a quick spin-slash that damages opponents on both sides.

• Edge Climb Attack: Upon climbing onto the stage, Cless performs a quick, but weak, horizontal slash.

• Second Edge Climb Attack (when damage percent is high): Cless performs a slow and weak diagonal slash.

3). Tilt Attacks:

• Forward Tilt (Fury Slash): Cless performs a powerful horizontal slash that does plenty of damage whilst sending the opponent flying. Excellent horizontal range, but poor vertical range. Can kill at medium-high percentages, but has a slow startup. Can be used immediately after Jab 1 or Jab 2.

• Forward Tilt (with item): Cless performs a swift, strong downward vertical swing with the item. Damage, speed, and knockback depends on what item Cless is wielding.

• Upward Tilt (Lightning Bolt): Cless performs a quick, rising diagonal slash--at the same time, a lightning bolt strikes the ground in front of him, shocking any unlucky opponent several times before sending them flying upward a little. Quick startup. Great vertical range, but poor horizontal range.

• Downward Tilt (Magma Rift): Cless brings his sword to the ground with bone-breaking force. At the same time, a pillar of molten lava shoots from the ground in front of him. Does a decent amount of damage whilst sending the opponent flying upward. Can kill at high percentages, but has a slightly slow startup.

4). Smash Attacks:

• Forward Smash (Soul Wave): Cless brings his sword arm across his front, gathering force and momentum, then unleashes a spray of energy that sends any opponent in front of him flying. Slightly slow startup. Can kill at high percentages, especially if charged.

• Forward Smash (with item): Cless performs a strong horizontal swing with the item. Damage, speed, and knockback depend on what item Cless is wielding.

• Upward Smash (Gale Barrier): Cless thrusts his sword into the ground, conjuring a magickal circle that unleashes a surge of energy which sends any adjacent or above opponents flying upward. Quick startup. Can kill at high percentages, especially if charged.

• Downward Smash (Soul Edge): Cless hops upward a short distance whilst bringing his sword up in an uppercut slash, then, whilst landing, brings his sword down with bone-breaking force, unleashing a 180-degree burst of energy that sends any nearby opponent flying. Quick startup. Can kill at high percentages, especially if charged. Though powerful, Cless can easily be knocked out of this move by a fast attack before he finishes.

5). Aerial Attacks:

• Neutral Aerial (Dual Kick): Cless deals two swift, powerful kicks and a final downward diagonal thrust of his sword. Instant start up, very slight ending lag. Good horizontal range. Has little knockback, but does a decent amount of damage altogether.

• Forward Aerial (Tiger Teeth): Cless performs a swift uppercut vertical slash of his sword, then brings it down for a second swift vertical slash. Instant startup. Good horizontal and vertical range. Has little knockback, but good for building up damage. Cless will be kept afloat during this move.

• Backward Aerial (Reverse Dual Kick): Cless performs a swift, powerful backward kick, turns around whilst performing another swift and powerful kick, then finally performs a downward diagonal thrust of his sword. Similar to his Neutral Aerial, except it turns him around. Instant startup, very slight ending lag. Good horizontal range. Has little knockback, but does a decent amount of damage altogether.

• Upward Aerial: Cless swings his sword above him whilst turning his body in a full circle. Quick startup. Good vertical range, but little horizontal range. Deals a fair amount of damage whilst knocking the enemy upward a short distance.

• Downward Aerial: Cless performs two powerful, but slightly slow stomp-kicks. Very slightly slow startup. Has next to no knockback and poor horizontal range, but deals a good amount of damage.

6). Special Moves:

• Standard Special (Sonic Blade): With a swift swing of his sword, Cless launches a fast-moving shockwave that runs along the floor until it either collides with an opponent or object, or reaches the end of the platform. If this move is used in the air, the shockwave will travel downward at a 45-degree angle, dissipating once it hits the ground. Instant startup. Does minor damage, but stops the opponent in his/her tracks.

• Side Special (Lionheart): Cless charges forward, his sword held close to his body, pointing forward. On the ground, Cless continues to run until the player either cancels the move by holding the control stick in the opposite direction, Cless reaches the end of the platform, or if Cless collides with a wall or an opponent. In the air, Cless flies forward a long distance (roughly as far as Ike’s fully charged quickdraw, but a little slower). Upon colliding with a wall or an opponent, Cless will unleash a burst of energy shaped like a lion’s head, which will send the opponent(s) flying--if this happens in the air, Cless will enter helpless frames after. Quick startup. Very high ending lag if cancelled. Deals a good amount of damage. Can kill at high percentages.

• Upward Special (Spatial Soar): Whilst facing the screen, Cless levitates his body and holds his sword in front of him with both hands. At the same time, he emits a surge of energy, damaging any adjacent opponent whilst pushing them away. After roughly a second, Cless teleports either directly upward or in the direction the player holds the control stick. If the player holds down the “special attack” button whilst Cless is teleporting, Cless will teleport next to the nearest opponent, or the opponent aimed at with the control stick, and perform a barrage of slashes and stabs before descending in helpless frames. Whereas if the player lets go of the special attack button after beginning the move, Cless will simply teleport to his destination and slowly fall downward in helpless frames. Quick startup. Good for building up damage, but can leave Cless open if used haphazardly.

• Downward Special (Rising Phoenix): Cless leaps into the air, then dives down at a 45-degree angle with his entire body engulfed in a Phoenix-shaped flame, his sword thrusted out in front of him. In the air, he will simply dive downward without jumping. Any opponent whom Cless collides with will be engulfed in flame and sent flying upwards a short distance. Quick startup. Does a decent amount of damage.

7). Grab Attacks:

• Grab Animation & Speed: Cless lunges forward whilst reaching out to grab the opponent. About the same speed as Marth’s grab, but farther. Dashing grab is a little slower and has a slight ending lag. Pivot grab is the fastest and farthest.

• Pummel: Cless knees the opponent in the torso. Slightly slower than Marth’s pummel, but more powerful.

• Forward Throw: Cless pushes the opponent away and sends him/her flying with a strong front kick. Opponent does not fly too far, but takes a fair amount of damage.

• Backward Throw: Cless throws the opponent behind him and deals the opponent a swift and powerful kick, knocking him/her away. Opponent does not fly too far, but takes a decent amount of damage.

• Upward Throw: Cless tosses the opponent above him and delivers a strong slash of his sword, sending the opponent flying upward. Opponent does not fly too far, but takes a decent amount of damage.

• Downward Throw: Cless slams the opponent to the ground and brings his sword down on him/her in a bone-breaking two-handed vertical strike. The opponent is sent flying upward and slightly forward. Opponent does not fly too far, but takes a decent amount of damage.

8). Taunts, Poses, Etc:

• Up Taunt: Cless brings his fists close to his waist and lets out a “power-up” cry. At the same time, a strong wind blows under his cape.

• Side Taunt: Cless stands erect and points his sword at the opponent. At the same time, he says, “Had enough?”

• Down Taunt: Cless’s body droops forward and a ghost version of himself floats above him.

• Victory Pose 1: Cless twirls his sword in his hand once and raises it in the air. At the same time, Cless shouts, “All right! I did it!”

• Victory Pose 2: Cless casually swings his sword twice then sheaths it, one hand of his hip, the other on the hilt of his sword. At the same time he says, “Never stood a chance!”

• Victory Pose 3: Cless turns his back to the camera, looking over his shoulder. At the same time, he says, “I never abandon my comrades.”

• Idle Pose 1: Cless briefly glances to the side.

• Idle Pose 2: Cless taps the toes of his boots on the ground.

• Onscreen Appearance (when the match begins): Cless flies toward the stage atop a mystical, winged flying machine. As Cless reaches the stage, he hops off the Reabird, lands on the stage in a kneeling position, and then readies his sword.

9). Final Smash (Pegasus): Before Cless, a silvery white winged horse appears. Cless mounts the Pegasus, and the Pegasus rears on its hind legs whilst letting out a cry of challenge. The two then take flight. Similar to Super Sonic, for a limited amount of time the player is able to fly around the stage, though at a slower and more controlled pace than Super Sonic. Any opponent whom Pegasus collides with will be sent flying or even KO’ed, depending on their damage percentage. Cless is also able to slice enemies in front of him with his sword, which will do even more damage and send the opponent flying even farther. Eventually, Cless will dismount Pegasus and Pegasus will disappear through a time portal, concluding the Final Smash. Be sure not to be far off the stage when this happens!

Or
I do also think that Lloyd has a greater chance of inclusion and I would prefer him to Cless. That being said, any Tales representation would be nice.

Yeah, now that I think about it, Lloyd is the more popular and well-known Tales character when it comes to the west and Europe. I would not mind either Tales character either, though I am not as big a fan of Lloyd Irving or Luke Fon Fabre than I am of Cless.

I do think Cless would stand a better chance if Namco wanted to go the Marth route(i.e. go with the first main character in the series).

It might also be decent promotion if ToP got a VC re-release. Only thing Lloyd would be promoting is a remake on a competitors console.

I was kinda expecting to see this topic to come up from you because the last one wasn't that good...

Anyway, like I said before I would like to see Cless as much as Lloyd in Smash. Him being the first protagonist and his game set in the same world as Lloyd certainly gives him perks. Also I think I like him bit more than Lloyd (who seems bit bland and gets hardly any development than any character in Symphonia.)

Though I think Symphonia would have more bigger and varied quality representation than Phantasia... I thus hope we'd get mixed stuff of representation.

Also Altais, can you add names on Cless's normal moves? Noticed also you use the names for the artes that were from DeJap-translations for Tales of Phantasia SNES?

Minor update: I just added a "Stage & Song Ideas" category to the original post. From various Tales games, I handpicked songs which I felt were the most memorable and best suited for the stage I chose.

Yeah, that is what I was thinking as well.

I forgot they were remaking Tales of Symphonia in HD for the PS3. I really wish they would release more Tales games on Nintendo consoles. The Tales series is one of mine favourite video game series of all time, but most of the games are on consoles I probably will never buy...

Yeah, I was thinking they could add content, such as trophies and stickers, from Tales of Phantasia as well as other Tales games that have appeared on Nintendo platforms. For instance, we could have Cless's companions and enemies alike as trophies, as well as other big Tales protagonists and antagonists like Lloyd, Luke, Yggdrasil, Emil and Asbel.

Alright, I will do that in a few minutes. I might only name the moves I got from the games, though, and not the moves I made up, as I am not very imaginative when it comes to naming things. [EDIT] There we go; I have now added names to his Rapid Jab, Smash Attacks, and Aerial Attacks. Like I said, though, I left some blank, as I am not good at naming things on my own.

Oh, by the way, has anybody here seen the anime adaptation of Tales of Phantasia? If not, I would recommend watching it; it is pretty cool. I am pretty sure it is still on YouTube--there are about four episodes in all, each one roughly thirty minutes. If Cless does get in Smash 4, I really hope the person whom voiced him in the anime, Johnny Yong Bosch, plays him in Smash 4. I loved Cless's voice in the anime; it was perfect on him--at least in mine opinion.

Greetings Cless supporters,

With the latest reveal of Pac-Man, I think it is safe to say we will not get any further Namco Bandai representation, at least not in the form of a second playable character. I would like to thank the few of you whom supported, and though it ended in defeat, this solitary journey was nevertheless a fruitful one.

Without further ado, I humbly request a lock.

Yo-yo-yoo. We ain't ever locking threads here, no matter what deconfirmation.

Also, check this out:

I did notice that all of Pacster's retro summons and items have a black outline to them:

But retro characters from the S Flag do not have the outline meaning that they are probably their own thing and not from Pac:

Here is another example; On the left the ghosts that wander around the stage have no outline meaning that they are probably an assist from the S Flag and on the right you see Pac using a ghost for an attack and it clearly has the black outline:

That means not all retro characters come form Pac and the S Flag can still summon assists
I wanna keep up the hope of seeing other Namco-reps around by this observation ala Assists, perhaps one of the Tales Of-characters. And more.

I know that your quite upset for Tales Of not being around there, but if I could say something, it has more been around Namco's own crossover games at this point? I'm really sorry for you though, and I know the pain anyway, since I used to support Lloyd (and Klonoa to some extent).

The recent reveal of Rayman as a trophy has given me some hope of Tales representation. Hopefully we will get at least one Assist Trophy, though that might be pushing it.

If Cless appears as an Assist Trophy, I hope he uses his Spatial Soar attack (also known as "Lunge" and "Teleport").

Fun Fact: The guy whom voices male Robin in Fire Emblem: Awakening and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U & 3DS is the same guy whom voices Chester Burklight in the Tales of Phantasia animation. [Shrugs] Not that it means anything, of course.

I KNEW that voice sounded familiar; I just could not put mine finger on it.
