The future of melee

Hi guys,

I've been thinking about what we're going to do after CRTs become scarce and Gamecubes start failing. While this might not be the case for another 10 years or so, I think we should be thinking about what we're going to do to keep melee alive and well. I've been looking a lot into dolphin and making a PC play exactly like a GameCube. Something that automatically boots into melee without the need of a mouse or keyboard. Of course a PC is more expensive than a GameCube, so I have to ask about price points. What would you be willing to pay for a melee setup? A copy of melee is now over $60 on eBay and I imagine GameCubes, and CRTs will only become more expensive as well.

Would you pay $500 for a melee setup that weighed ~12lbs and was very similar to a CRT in terms of input lag?

Thanks for your feedback

I personally wouldn't, I don't really think it would be worth the 500 dollars. I mean you could probably just buy more copies of melee and another gamecube with that money, then again, I'm probably being a bit ignorant, because I'm not really that sure about how much all of this stuff costs these days besides the game itself.. I got my gamecube for 45 dollars a few years ago.. Not sure about now, though.

I wouldn't pay 500 but for me that would just be a crt. As for worrying about gamecubes and crts they are both very sturdy so I don't think that will be a major problem, but there are enough "true fans" who would pobally sheel out 500 to keep there favorite video games alive

Yeah that's what I think will have to end up happening in the future. The cost of PCs will go down though, so in the future it will probably cost ~$350 or so for near perfect emulation. The CRTs and game cubes are very sturdy. That's true, but the electrolytic capacitors in the CRTs and Gamcubes will dry out causing video artifacts, and eventually failure. The GameCube has about 15 years of life left and the CRTs have around 10 years of life.

What about people throwing perfectly good crt's into the junkyard? How do we educate them?

Befriend the garbage man, tell him to sell all functioning CRTs on Craig's List. You could liberate an entire suburb from laggy setups, and Mr. Trash might be able to make a little extra cash if he takes you up on the idea.
maybe the demand for these kinds of products (at least cubes) might do something for us?
GCs aren't the main concern right now, but if they all start breaking, Nintendo will probably refuse to start manufacturing 15-year-old hardware and they hate the Melee community so much that we'd probably never see a Melee re-release. The only realistic options if all of the GCs die in the next couple of decades are go to either vanilla or homebrewed Wiis or create a standardized type of PC setup used at all major tournaments.

Well, Wii run GC games too. I think that the main problem will be the CRTs.
But before resources disapper we hope that Nintendo fully understands our love for the game and gives us a remake.
