As much as the title statement would suck, I can see it being true. For this game it seems like all the stops are indeed being pulled. All these characters, items, stages, modes, and overall attention to detail seem like they could be a sign of the penultimate super smash brothers game. With all these things going for it, it would be kinda hard to top in such a big way as this is doing to Brawl. What do you guys think? Could this indeed be the last smash?

No... Smash prints too much money.

Whether Sakurai is involved in the next game or not the series will undoubtedly continue.

More likely to be last Smash game made by Sakurai. One can only imagine what the next one would be like, or how long we'll have to wait for its creation.

Sakurai was not contacted when Nintendo announced they were planning the next Smash Bros. in 2005, it was only after that announcement that they reached out to Sakurai, who had since Melee left HAL Laboratories, and thus wasn't hired within the Nintendo branch. It said this on the original Brawl site, the one that was up before the Dojo.

This shows that Nintendo is willing to make a new Smash Bros. even if Sakurai isn't involved, and they have every right to do so. I do hope it's being left in Namco's hands when the inevitable happens though, I have a feeling it's the right company to give Smash the proper treatment in the future, especially since they've been under the supervision of Sakurai once, they know more about the development process than anyone else at this moment.

Honestly as long as Nintendo exists I think there will be a Smash every console cycle. Sakurai may or may not be involved but I shrug. I think he probably loves it even if it IS slowly killing him.

But yar, Nintendo is far too aware of how much the series sells/sells consoles and how much hype it sets in the fanbase to ever really stop making it until it doesn't do well anymore

I love Sakurai. He hasn't made a single game I haven't liked and KI: Uprising was my favorite 3DS game. I feel as though it is time for him to take a break and let someone else helm the Smash series. He has laid great groundwork already but his motivations for doing certain things have been questionable sometimes. Smash has so much potential that isn't being unlocked and it is sad. He deserves a rest anyway due to his condition. I don't want this man dying just to bring me a game.

I don't think so, but the next Smash will take a while to be released. Which could be a good thing, in the end. Also, if the next Smash isn't made by Sakurai, I will probably not bother with it. It is his creation, he should be in charge of the game (even though I disagree with some of his decisions, but that is a different thing entirely). I don't want Smash in the hands of some random director.

I hope Sakurai has an apprentice or something.
Or he hopefully writes out a guideline/ rules for Smash.
Last thing we need is 5 characters from fighting game franchises, 50 third party characters, and Anime characters.

No this is not the last Smash game, the series earns Nintendo too much money to let go.

I though see it as Sakurai's last Smash game though... Explains why Sakurai is working with Namco. Maybe they will carry the torch.

Why would this game be the last iteration when Sakurai can still remove short hopping for smash 5?

Nah, as people have said, Sakurai's last smash? maybe but the last smash is unlikely.

At this point we're essentially guaranteed a Mario Kart, New Super Mario Bros, Mario Party and Smash Bros are probably going to be constants for the Home Console.

Well the Wii U will eventually become outdated so a new smash Bros will be required eventually.

That said DLC will surely lengthen this games lifespan and keep people interested in it for even longer. That's no bad thing, you don't need to keep reinventing the wheel all the time. Take the time to appreciate what we're getting.

Last Smash? Not unless the world ends by next console cycle.
Last smash directed by Sakurai? Likely.
