Whenever I watch Smash 4 matches, I notice that the players drink a TON of water. Is there any reason for this? Does drinking an enormous amount of water when playing Smash improve your gameplay?

Alot of venues can get really hot, so staying hydrated is important to keep you on top of your game.

It's just to keep hydrated, which I guess does affect your gameplay, but nothing like gaining super reflexes or anything

Some people need more water than others. If you're in a tournament and working hard you'll need a lot.

I drink two entire bottles of water everyday during this summer the Southern Hemishpere goes through while you guys freeze to death. I'd imagine if you were nervous, you'd probably end up drinking even more, especially if you were in a tournament. Although I've never been to one, if they're anything like Anime Conventions, trust me, it gets hot there especially if it's a closed space. A lot of people in the same place, breathing the same air, makes any place hot.
I dread the day I'll cosplay as Lucina in this heat, I'll probably pass out and I'm really used to heat, mind you.

I actually have a severe condition of "Hypohidrosis" which is basically excessive sweating (for me it's from my hands and feet). My body dehydrates very rapidly because of this and I end up drinking liters of water like nobodies business just to keep myself hydrated. (I sweat even more when I'm nervous or anxious)

But that aside keeping yourself hydrated is important for your brain in order to function optimally.

Also, water is gud. Tastes good, easy to find, cheap, and it keeps you hydrated far better than any of that soda crap.

I thought this thread was just gonna be a scientific analysis of what happens when you splashed water on the top players.

The ****? Soda is amazing. You haven't lived until you've had a Sprite at just the right time.

I drink too much soda myself and I can assure you water is at least 100x better than any soda. Most importantly because it hydrates you better.

Water is important anytime and anywhere. As said, staying hydrated is important in any competitive setting and yes, there are plenty of people who sweat just gaming.

I might be crazy, but I thought that as well.

I don't even like drinking soda all that much. Soda from the cinema and fast food restaurants (which I've been avoiding like the plague, this year) tastes like sugary water with chemicals in it, and while regular soda tastes far better, it's way too sugary and it doesn't hydrate you in the slightest.
Even when I do drink soda, I prefer Pepsi...
You're better off just drinking juice or water, it's far better for you health, it doesn't have dubious chemicals in it (well... atleast you'd hope), it does an infinitely better job at quenching your thirst, it has far less sugar... whatever else you can think of.

You don't assure me anything. You don't drink soda to stay hydrated. You drink it because it tastes good.

Is it worth it to feel like crap all the time? Personally, I don't drink anything other than water. I don't even drink juice. Once you start drinking water regularly, you can never go back.

Competition leads to stress/anxiety and this leads to exhaustion. To cope with that you gotta stay hydrated. I mean in general you should always keep hydrated to keep energetic throughout the day, so Smash players will take a drink between matches, goes for all competitions really.

Friend of my dad's, who's a survival expert and former military doctor, once told me that the best way to hydrate yourself is to consume one small glass of water every fifteen minutes. The body can only absorb so much nutrients at a time before it just rejects them, so you won't get any greater benefit from drinking an excess of water.

The more you know.

Soda must not like you or something. I drink like two cans a day and I don't feel any worse off than usual. Water is good every now and then, but I couldn't imagine actually drinking it seriously, like with food or something. There's no taste to it. Most I've ever drunk of it was to wash down medicine.

Water is great. Even at weeklies I usually down 2 or 3 bottles. I remember one time I went to a state tourney and only had one bottle of water for the whole thing and the venue didn't have ANY drinking fountains. I was pretty much dead by the end of it (we were there for like 10 hours). I tend to drink a lot in general but it keeps you hydrated, feeling good, and I think just feeling good. Soda is meh. It'll dehyderate you and get too much sugar in your system that your preformance will probably be pretty inconsistent. I find water to help me. I guess the idea of over hydrated is a lot better than the idea of bring dehydrated.

Also: I already have adrenaline control problems, I don't need anymore sugar in my body than I already have.

The sugar thing is a good point too. Sugar does give you a brief rush of energy, but you will crash very quickly after it, and that will affect your performance. Soft drinks, chocolate and other sugary sweets may taste good at first, but they will only impair you in the long run if you need to maintain concentration. I've learned that the hard way many times.

A healthy, wholesome snack can fill you up and help keep you energised for the day ahead. It's why I bring packets of dried fruit with me whenever I go to tourneys: they're compact, they satisfy my craving for sweetness and they taste great. Candied fruit is the best thing in human history.

In September, me and my friends organized a small tournament, and when I was at the last game of the Grand Finals, my adrenaline was so high and I was so stressed, both my arms went numb. That's how bad my adrenaline problems get.
I really don't think anyone needs anymore sugar than they already have in their body if they want to compete, see how bad I got even after not eating sugar.

When you have an extreme thirst, water tends to be the most satisfying drink.

The only problem is that, if you drink too much water... well, you know, everything that goes through your mouth will eventually find a way out of your body in one way or the other. If you drink too much water, you'll probably urinate a lot, too. I always noticed I tend to need to go to the bathroom often during competition, and that's why.

I just pictured ZeRo desperate to go to the bathroom during an onstage match.

That's enough internet for today.

The caffeine in pop is a diuretic, which means it makes you pee more so it dehydrates you. Also it is basically straight sugar which spikes your insulin levels and leads to diabetes when consistently ingested over long periods of time.

Water is best for your hydration and when you are hydrated your body functions better than when it is dehydrated. Also most tourney venues get very warm so you sweat more and need more water to replace the sweat.

The caffeine will help with reaction times though, but most of the time in tournaments you have adrenaline running high which also increases your reaction time.

If you get really high levels of adrenaline going and combined with the caffeine effects you get that over nervous feeling where your heart starts beating really hard and your hands shake. If you get that way it makes it harder to make rationale decisions and also harder to make precise inputs.

If you get really high adrenaline rushes I would stick with only water.

If you don't get any adrenaline when you play a little caffeine could help with reaction times.

It all depends on the person.

Tl:dr

Caffeine dehydrates you but increases reaction time

Adrenaline + caffeine can be too much and make you jittery and make poor decisions

Find your balance between the two.

I drink water to keep myself hydrated and to help prevent hand cramps while I play
I used to play a lot of sports while I was in HS and I could power through a leg cramp untill I was called out
but if I'm playing a fighting game, having my hand cramp up is the worst thing possible, you need your fingers to act on a split second

Personally, I drink a can of rockstar 15 minutes before i'm scheduled to play any major matches.

Hydrate before that and during your matches if you don't have any medical or personal reason not to. I find I play a lot better with my reactions and ability to sort incoming data boosted from a tasty tasty blueberry rockstar xD

I'm looking forward to a video from Genesis where a guy runs around and throws water on smash players and records their reactions. For science, of course.
