The Civilization Thread

I've been playing these games on and off for years. For those of you who aren't familiar with it, Civilization is a series of strategy games where you play as nation, historic or modern, and attempt to be the greatest civilization in the world. This can mean building an incredible culture, becoming the most advanced society on the planet or just kicking your neighbors in the teeth.

So far there have been five numbered games in the series. A sci-fi spin off called Civilization Beyond Earth came out a few months back, although I have yet to play it.

So, does anyone else play this series?

Well, I like Beyond Earth, but it's not as good as V.

First one I've played was V. I loved it and played a couple full matches with my dad (about 10 hours per match), but my friends and I can't ever find enough time to sit down and play for 10 hours, then we never want to continue the match we started a couple weeks prior because it would feel like one of us were starting at a disadvantage. For that reason, we have started multiple games but have never finished one.

I have a love/hate relationship with this game (and every other grand strategy or 4X game). I love playing them and have been pretty regularly for... 7-10 years? now, but I've never completed a single game and I'm really godawful at the middle and endgame.

But there's nothing quite as satisfying as building up a small (country/kingdom/galactic empire).

Yeah. The only other 4X game I ever played (unless you include the end of SPORE) was MoO 2 and that was pretty fun. The graphics are dated and there are numerous glitches scattered throughout the game, but other than that, it was a good game.
