This idea popped into my head while I was watching a video about custom moves. Looking at the way the 3DS is being shown compared to the Wii U, I notice just how much more casual the 3DS version feels to me right now. There were alot of mini games shown at E3 and Smash run is being hyped to no end for the 3DS version whereas the Wii U version is getting more multiplayer and competitive publicity. Am I the only one who's noticed the custom movesets have only been shown on the Wii U version and how the Wii U version got that invitational for the Wii U version but the 3ds got no love at all. I feel like the way it's being advertized makes the Wii U version feel.... bigger and better than the 3DS version. It'll likely be that way in the end though so at the very least I can forgive it for that.

I'm kinda wondering just how competitive the 3DS version will actually be. It's not like I'm expecting the 3DS to outshine the Wii U version in it's competitiveness, I just feel like there's a line being drawn for the 2 versions with the Wii U being Competitive and the 3DS being casual. I personally wouldn't like it to be like that but it looks like that's what it's going to be.

plz discuss.

I'm fairly certain that the 3DS version will not be used in competitive play, and will probably sell less than the 3DS version. This is considering the nature of the marketing of fighting games, and the fact that the 3DS version looks way worse than the Wii U version in terms of graphics.

We'll probably see the 3DS version mostly on trains, planes, buses, and in school cafeterias.

Sakurai has said from the very beginning that the 3DS version is like a "personal training ground" and that the Wii U version is the "stadium". So I think it's safe to say the 3DS version's focus is single player features that allow you to get new stuff, that you can import into the Wii U version. It also seems like the 3DS version's modes are designed to be played for no more than a few minutes at a time (Smash Run is roughly six minutes in length for one full round of it, Trophy Rush seems to have a five minute time limit, etc). Essentially, they are doing exactly what they should do with the 3DS version - tailouring it specifically

However I do hope the Wii U version has a substantial single player component too. Something like SSE in Brawl, but without the cutscenes (since that's been confirmed), and stages based on the represented franchises. I have noticed that, in hindsight, we know very little about the Wii U version. What we know about is:

-The character roster so far
-Stages so far
-It will have custom movesets
-It will have With Anyone and With Friends play, the former being split into For Fun and For Glory
-It will be the first game on the Wii U to utilise Amiibos and will release alongside the first wave of Amiibos
-It can be bought bundled with a Smash themed Gamecube controller and Gamecube Adapter

Half of these points are shared with the 3DS version anyway, so they aren't necessarily details for the Wii U version, just for the overall initiative.

While I know tournaments and the like will obviously go with the Wii U version, and while I will play the heck out of it online, I really hope the game's single player component is really good. I didn't really enjoy collecting trophies or unlockable characters in Melee, but I greatly enjoyed it in Brawl. So I hope the Wii U version is like Brawl in terms of being a great single player experience.

I see what you mean by the 3DS Smash being made for casual play and all but as a 3DS owner i can see myself playing Smash on it competitively online or with friends regardless if the 3ds gets a competitive scene or not.

Here's this thread again, but I'll oblige.

The 3DS yes has some issues with going into competitive play, but it also has some advantages. Swiss Brackets are possible, customization should be easier, and quite a bit more little things. Yes, the Wii U will probably see more support, but with the instal base of the 3DS plus how much cheaper it will be to get (with a 2DS it's WAY better then getting a Wii U) there will still be a LOT of people on this thing. At a bare minimum I can see an online community bigger then what AllIsBrawl had on the 3DS, if not even some live events happening.

That's because it is.
Bigger? Sure.
Better? Subjective.
I'll play them both because portability is nice and so are... HD graphics and gamecube controllers, I guess.

I'm not 1000% competitive obviously so it doesn't bug me as much.

To be honest, it's not right to compare a handheld game to a console game. Both use different engines and have different features, but play the same. The two games are aimed towards both casual and hardcore gamers, so I don't see the problem. I think both will be great.

Why this is even a question, I'll never know. Of course the 3ds will be competitive. It's just as much a smash game as the Wii U version is. I don't see a problem.

While the game might appear to be "casual" because it's on a handheld, the 3DS version will have a competitive scene.
3DS-exclusive players will make their version competitive, and because Smash 3DS is a Smash game, of course it will be competitive.

Of course it's better suited for casual play, as a handheld game, it has to be.

Competitive play is obviously still possible, all you really need for that are deep, solid mechanics and the ability to do multiplayer, but this version will still lean towards casual play, and that's how it should be. We're getting two versions for a reason, each one being specifically geared for a different playstyle (while still allowing for the other) is kind of a must.

The 3ds one seems more foalty and more brawl like than the wiiu one to me i don't plan on playing it competitively due to the controls.

I think they're just keeping the Wii U bonus modes a secret atm. I think they might start announcing some of them after the 3ds game is out. Look at it as a reason to buy the 3ds and the wii u version, if you will.

Wow this thread is still alive. Huh. Thanks for the answers. It seems the general concensus is that the 3ds version may be competitive just not as much as the Wii U version. This brings up another question though. What would you do if the 3DS version were more competitive than the Wii U version?

Nintendo is showing they are supporting both versions for tounaments. I do think they might focus on the U version more.

Yes, something like that. If it was better, a lot of new players would join the competitive scene, but both are better.
Both versions will have competitive scenes regardless.

Both versions will definitely be casual,As for Competitive the 3DS will be used for Online Tournaments and the Wii U will be in-person tournaments however smaller TOs might use the 3DS versions based on popularity in the area

Competitive matches will happen.

Regardless of what anyone thinks. Be it a tournament hosted by something like Evo, or a more local affair.

The 3DS version is as casual as the Wii U version. In other words, both are perfectly viable for competitive and casual play. End of story.

Casual or not it's still gonna sell millions. And I'm getting it day 1 and playing Smash Run for hours with every character.

The 3DS version won't see as much support among the hardcore simply because you can't plug a GameCube controller into it. But none the less it'll still have it's own tournaments.

For instance Nintendo is holding a Smash Bros 3DS tournament at San Diego Comic Con. The Big N will support both games, but they'll definitely be pushing the Wii U version harder when it gets near release. It's up to your local community to decide if they want to run 3DS tournaments or not. Here in Melbourne Australia we already have two planned tournaments for the 3DS version of the game shortly after its release.
