I had been meaning to make a topic about this for a while, but forgot until I saw Rusty Shackleford's topic on the same subject. That topic was this topic's ******** brother.

1.00 USD

0.993697 CAD

From XE.com.

The Canadian dollar has surpassed, albeit marginally, its American counterpart. What does this mean for the future of the US? Is this a temporary dip, or will the USD continue to drop? Is it just that those Canadians have finally done something right?

Much better.

I think the dip is just like the Euro. The euro fluctuates in value to about .71 Euros to the dollar on average. It normally stays around there, but I've seen it dip well below that.

The world economy is fluctuating heavily and with all our foreign affairs, China's commercialization, etc, expect A LOT of currency to change value, very soon.

Some people have told me that it's suggested the American government is keeping the value of the US Dollar low on purpose to make sure it can pay off it's debts, something along those lines at least, any takers on this?

Actually it's a bad thing for Canada.

A big part of our economy is based on selling stuff down south. If our dollar has a higher value than the american dollar, then the companies from the states have no reason to buy their products from us.

Also Janitor is pointing out another potential problem for our economy... Canadians will buy less from Canadian stores, and more from American stores. Which means, more money that exits our economy.

Exactly what I was thinking, I was just too busy being a jackazz in the first topic. The only good thing about it is for people who want to go buy stuff from the U.S., we now get more money when crossing over and spend rediculously less on what we buy, so win-win on small scale but lose-lose on the big.

Oh, and a big news story where I'm from, apparently, local marijuana, known to some as "B.C. Bud", is plumetting in sales in the States because of the rise in the dollar, sucks to be a drug trafficker.

Well, in the long term, our prices for American products should go down. Of course, there's always the Alberta oil that they somehow end up selling to all provinces that are not Alberta, but that's another, much more depressing story.

But what few things are "made in America" that we stock our shelves will hopefully start to drop once we survive the bad, immediate fall-out of the dollar's rise and get to a point where we can actually enjoy it.

The US dollar will probably continue to go down a bit. It's all because of the subprime mortgage chaos going on right now in the United States. With the recent key interest rate dropped by the government (by about a half a point to ~5%) the USD lost some of its value even further. The USD may rebound at some point in the near future but I do not know when.

I personally blame gangster rap and the American schooling system.

Edit: Forgot to add MTV too.

But surely they must increase the value of your gold! They take up so much of the supply!
LOL...cheers mate. Gangsta rap needs to be removed from our country ASAP and I know just the man for the job. I ask you all this: 50 cent survived multiple bullet wounds...but can he survive a knee?

Meh, I don't think this means a whole lot. Depending on currency values some businesses do better and others do worse, and I don't think it's TOO indicative of economic strength.

I dunno about that. This is the first time in a long time Canada had a competent leader while the U.S. had a not-so-competent one. Usually it's been a stiff reverse.

According to my money converter on Vista, 1 US Dollar = .98 Canadian Dollar.

It'll never be a valuable as the Euro, but **** like this is why they want to make a North American Union.

Uhhhh... the weaker money gets ***** when you go over the border. Yes, a cent makes a difference.

And it's a bigger deal when you consider how low CAD has been in the past.

I have poor understanding of economics so excuse my ignorance.

How did CAD get more valuable anyway? I'm not really up to date with international news right now.
