So I'm new to smash. This is my first ever fighting game but at this point I've put in 77 hours as megaman and my win rate for the past 100 battles is 70%. I tend to stay with opponents who beat me and leave when someone is weak so I don't feel that's inflated.

Despite being decent in FG, its clear that in the competitive scene the scale is different and there I feel like a beginner.

I'm trying to incorporate grabs more but I have no idea when they are safe. What are proper setups and when is it appropriate to grab?

Also when is it appropriate to roll? Is it really better to turn and run instead of rolling to retreat?

Grabs are generally best used when your opponent is shielding. Depending on your grab frames and range, it can be a strong approach or punish when your opponent is trying to reach the ground.

Rolling is tons more punishable offline, try to break the habit if you've acquired one. As for when you should actually roll, it's usually best to use it to evade a ranged attack that's zoning you to get behind an opponent. Rolling away is good if that's the zoning range for you, otherwise it doesn't actually give you any benefit besides a moment to breathe.
