Smash Legend
1. Everything is a troll.
If you read a message saying Melee is not a fighting game, you are being trolled. If someone says Melee has no combos or every pro uses Fox, you are being trolled. If someone says Grand Finals should be a close, fun, and exciting set, you are being trolled. If Shoryuken publishes a news article about how Melee is no longer being streamed at Evo, you are being trolled. If at any point you believe someone in the chat is being sincere or is in any way not trolling, you should hide the chat at once and continue watching the stream alone.
2. Don't feed the trolls.
Any response or reply of any kind directed at trolls or comments they have made are considered "feeding". Ignoring trolls is also considered feeding. Feeding trolls and other assorted stream monsters only serves to nourish them and increase their strength. If you are being trolled, hide the chat immediately. Unfortunately, this is a way of ignoring trolls so you are feeding them, but trolls obtain less nutrients from the silent treatment than they do from direct arguments. Combating trolls is often choosing the lesser of two evils. This is a reality you will have to accept if you are to make it through Evo relatively troll-free.
3. "LOL" is your best friend.
You can't defeat teh lulz as it is not a position or stance of any kind. "LOL" was once an expression that implied laughter, but as anyone who spends a decent amount of time on the internet these days can tell you, tacking an "LOL" at the end of any statement now seems to always makes sense. lol Like ignoring trolls, LOLing at trolls is still a form of feeding, but unlike ignoring which simply serves to minimize the nutrients trolls receive, LOLing can occasionally put a troll on tilt. Trolls are self-centered and egotistical creatures, but many trolls and aspiring-trolls are also self conscious because of their hideousness that they keep hidden behind their keyboard. LOLing at weaker trolls can knock them off their game, but more experienced trolls who are on dat next level yomi will see through lulz to identify it for the feeding it really is. If a troll attempts to respond to your lulz, a safe precautionary measure is to append a "u mad?" to your discussion. Trolls who are used to easy pickings are often caught off guard by this behavior, and will often allow you to flip the script on them so they become the trollee instead of the troller. Use teh lulz at your own risk. If the enemy troll replies at any point after a "LOL u mad?" counter-troll, play it safe and refer to rule 2.
4. Answer Melee-related questions quickly and briefly.
By virtue of rule 1, all questions should be treated as trolls. However, that does not mean you should avoid answering said questions even though that is considered feeding. To remain silent after a question, especially sarcastic ones, is to empower them further as the general lack of an answer says more than an actual answer does. Citing rule 2, ignoring trolls is still considered feeding, but in the case of questions, feeding them with answers provides less nutrients than silence. If the troll is inexperienced enough to ask an answerable question, a short and sweet response can actually diffuse the troll entirely not unlike the method of LOLing depicted in rule 3. In fact, if you take the example counter-troll from rule 3, "LOL u mad?", you may notice that simply responding "Yes" is a simple and effective way of diffusing the counter-troll. The best part about this counter-counter-troll is that the result is the termination of the conversation unless the enemy troll decides to provoke you further. If this occurs, play it safe and refer to rule 2.
5. When's Melee?
Meme spam during downtime of any sort is encouraged.
Closing the stream when there is Melee on the screen is strictly forbidden.
Participation in chat flooding when there is Melee hype is mandatory.
All Melee is considered hype.
No johns.
I do not expect everyone to be able to adhere to these rules. In fact, I fear most will disregard this thread as some sort of... troll. Some will inevitably be ravaged by the society of trolls that is video game stream chats. If I am able to save just one soul from such a fate, however, it will have made this message worth my time. Good luck to you all.
