It said runaway in melee. WTF does it say now? The only thing i can see on it is Tonzur.

That's because the screenshot is most likely from the Japanese version of the game. The band was not called the Runaway five in the japanese version of Earthbound (Mother 2), IIRC.

anyways, I looked it up to be sure. They are called the Tonzura Brothers in Mother 2.

Actually... it does not say Tonzur, but since the image is cut off you cannot see that it says Tonzura.
This is because in the Japanese version of Earthbound, the Runaway Five is actually called the Tonzura Bros. I'm not exactly sure what Tonzura means, but I know that they were meant to be a parody of the Super Mario Bros. in that the 2 main brothers resembled Mario and Luigi.
I might even be possible that if you turn in Japanese in Smash Melee, the Tonzura Van might drive by as well? I've no idea....

They are a parody of the Blue Brothers. Another example of the Japanese loving American things.

You should look up all of the Beatles References in Earthbound. So it's not just a love of American things. Earthbound has a LOT of cultural reference. ^_^

Speaking of Beatles references, the series is named after a John Lennon song (or so says Wikipedia...).

Now that you mention it, I believe it is a combination.
Not only do the resemble the Blues Brothers when on stage, but off-stage when they are dawning their normal attire, they resemble the Mario Brothers much more. (The fat-short one has a Red vest, and the skinny-tall one has a Green one)
