This past weekend I went to my first melee tourney and I was really happy with the way things went. I got absolutely demolished in the tournament, but I had a great time playing friendlies against all sorts of people. Almost everyone that I talked to was respectful. There was one guy who told me "get ****ed, idiot" when I tried to play a quick game as the TO announced singles were starting and friendlies were ending. No bid deal though. I laughed it off.
At one point, there was a guy going around asking for money matches, and I ended up challenging him. In the end, I lost $2, but it was the best $2 I ever lost. After that match, we continued to play and he gave me a ton of tips about my character (Falcon), how to handle certain match-ups, and how to improve out of shield options. He seriously spent like 2 hours helping me out and I really appreciated that.
Also, I had a few of people asking how I ended up at that tournament because it was a bit of a drive for me to get there. I told them I found it here on smashboards, and how there were no tournaments near me, so I went to this one. I was informed that the local/regional facebook groups are way more active, and from that, I found a bunch of upcoming local tournaments less than 30 min away from me. So that was pretty awesome too.
Overall, I got a positive feeling from my first melee tournament and I'm super excited to continue my competitive melee journey. If you were at the New Rochelle tournament on Saturday, thanks for being supportive of new players like me. Y'all are cool people. :^)
