Teching the Ground?

At a tournament earlier today, somebody mentioned how, under certain circumstances, you can tech the ground and have your character reach down and push off of it to immediately recover. I've seen it used once, but nothing more. Could you guys give me any tips (frame data is always lovely) for how to do it? If it alters it at all, I use Marth.

Just press R or L (I think Z works too) 20 frames or so before landing, holding left or right makes your character tech that way, but no directional input makes you get up on place.
