Teching on the side of a stage

I don't know what this ability is called, and as such I didn't want to guess at it in the search box. I hope you guys understand :/

I've seen it in several videos where if a character is close to the edge when they get hit, they can tech off the side of the stage and try again. How is this done? I remember it being a big deal in the Marth vs PC Chris vids.

You have to DI towards a wall and tap R or L within 20 frames or so, if I remember correctly. Holding up lets you do a walljump, but you won't need to do this too much with Marth. You just have to practice if you want to get good at it. It's referred to as teching or wall-teching.

Yes, if you wall-jump, I've heard if you b-air immediately after doing so you shift your momentum and can survive it..I've never did this personally so don't go running with it.

This is something that I'm having trouble practicing.

First off, I should clarify my method of practicing ledge-techs, which is planting a motion-sensor bomb on the ledge and then up Bing into and attempting to tech.

Now, if the frame range in which one can press L in order to successfully tech is 20 frames Before impact, one should theoretically be able to press L at the beginning of the up B (say, within the first 10 frames) and still make a successful tech.

However, when I practice using said method, I get inconsistent results. Sometimes I manage to tech, sometimes I don't. The problem is that I don't know why I don't tech when I fail to do so. I don't know if I'm not pressing L soon enough, or if I happen to be just a bit too far from the ledge to be able to DI into it.

Any ideas of why I might be failing to tech sometimes but not other times?

Your aren't di-ing good enough into the hit if you're getting the pressing of l or r correctly.

Smash di is king.
That just might be it, since I really don't know how much movement ASDI adds, and I suppose it's possible that there's a big enough error range to throw it off.

Do people who are able to ledge-tech consistently (Ken) use actual smash DI to move into the ledge, or do they get by with ASDI? I suppose that I'm underestimating the process, since Husband/Wife thought Ken's teching was amazing and yet even he wasn't able to do it every time.

I'm not entirely sure, depends on what you're trying to ledgetech...With ganon, if I can ledgetech peach's thrown turnips, my smash di is at the top of its game.

wouldn't an immediate B -> save you as well?

Or B <-...
No, and over B won't save you as the first over B (the one that lifts you, will just lift you further away from the stage. And if you don't have the first over B you will just plummet. The over B doesn't stop the direction your going that well.

Teching time for each character is different?

I don't believe so, the characters may be near the edge at different times during their up-b but the tech frames are the same.

yeah, sorry that's what I meant. You see, marth's UpB is pretty quick compared to other character's UpB move such as Link's, or Doc's. So you have to time differently.

Sorry for confusing you.

I tried reading guides on how to tech and wall-jump but I just don't understand it. I can't practice doing them because I don't have gc right now which makes it more difficult for me. Am I supposed to tech on let's say, anywhere under the ledge of FD? What will that do anyway? I thought that Marth couldn't wall jump too so I'm kinda confused. All the technical terms just hurt my brain D: What will Marth's tech'd up b result in, for example.

When you ledgetech an attack with marth, he'll turn his back to the stage and fall normally.

Marth can't wall jump normally like the other characters but he can tech wall jump.

You ledgetech by di-ing into the stage and hitting the l or r button beforehand. Sometimes simple asdi is enough, sometimes you need smash di, it all depends on the attack. Peach's and samus's d-smash for example, all you need to do is hit L or R at the right time.
