I am interested in the idea of a team format for smash that would take advantage of having 8 players at once.
The problems with this tend to be that you have too much going on at once on the screen, at least with a deathmatch style game.
I was brainstorming a bit and I think that there needs to be a way to focus the action, and allow for specialization of positions.
After a bit of thinking I have come up with a format that I would like to try, and I wanted to just share the idea with you all and get some feedback.

Teams of 4. 1 stock a piece. 1 member of each team is designated the MVP. If your MVP dies your team loses the match. The MVP has a handicap of 100%.

giving the MVP a heavy handicap makes the character choice for that position important and it shape the strategy for the team. you could run a heavy character to compensate for the handicap, or run a small evasive character. The other members of the team would then be divided as deemed necessary to defending or attacking roles.

If you run an evasive MVP you might run 3 attackers, and then just count on your MVP to take care of himself.
You could run a heavy MVP and then have a defender hang out to make up for his lack of mobility.

Come character would certainly be better at some positions than others.

I don't know about stage selection yet, but larger stages would certainly be on the table, and circle camping would be very difficult to pull of for the mvp because he/she could have 3 to 4 other players cornering him off.

Anyway I would be excited to see this format take off.

Let me know what you think.

I definitely like the idea and am looking for ways to switch things up myself for 3v3/4v4. (Personal favorites are Capture the Flag which I saw on YouTube and Quidditch which I saw on Reddit).

Maybe reduce the handicap to 50%? 100% might a bit too high and the trade off equipment starts you at 30% which is probably too low.

Could you link the capture the flag and the quidditch. I would like to see how that works.

I was thinking about the handicap, because i think that its one of the most important parts of the format. You need to MVP to be fragile because that way you encourage defensive play. I personally just think that 50% is a little too low. A single combo string in many cases can get you to fifty and more, and we see a gap of 50% close very quickly because of this. At 100 they are at kill percent for many moves, but its important to note that the stages are larger, so that many moves will still not kill even if they normally would.

Really late, but do you have a link to the capture the flag this? That sounds cool

Here's the link. I have to admit this is very casual play, and the 2v2 capture the flag that was going around on Reddit unveiled a major issue; villager can pocket the flag, escape to a safe spot, and easily get the point. But I was watching it and my first thought was, "this looks fun". And I miss not taking Smash Bros so seriously.

Back to the topic at hand, Combo Breaker had a 3v3 VIP mode that was fantastic. The VIP (MVP) didn't have a handicap on him, though, and everyone had 3 lives.
