Hello, SBs.
I'm new to the Melee scene. I was a big fan of Project M but I think it's time to move on because 1) It's no longer supported and 2) I really love watching Melee, and I want to be good at it. All of this being said, I realllllly need a teacher. I've watched videos on Youtube (anything you could possibly link, I bet I've watched it.) My point is, I don't really learn like that. It's hard for me. I can't ask the video I'm watching questions I might have. I prefer a human to a video I suppose. I guess what I'm asking is if anyone is willing to sit down and teach me. I've asked on Smash Ladders and people in there don't care about you unless you can destroy them with like Kirby. For anyone who is willing: I live in North Carolina, and I know to wavedash and SHFFL. That's about it. I understand if this is asking too much and if this is the wrong sub, please feel free to move my thread. Anyways, thank you if you took the time to read and I look forward to hearing back from anyone who has time to mentor me. Thanks!

If you have questions and ****, feel free to ask them in the falco discussion thread (I assume you main falco based on your profile description). I and other guys will there will be able to answer most questions you have.

Also, what part of NC do you live in? Going to tournaments is a pretty good start for your melee career. If you don't feel comfortable specifying or w/e thats fine. I'll update you with the FB links in a bit.

I live in Central/Western NC, near Winston-Salem. Not sure if you've heard of it. 45 minutes from Greensboro, if that helps. Also, I should probably change my profile, as Falco is the only character I've been using so far but should give the others a chance as well.

You really need a teacher? Who really needs a student? No one's going to go out of their way for you if you don't have any promise of doing anything in return

Maybe I should put in a TL;DR for you :o

I think Epsilon's point was that this is something that you already have the tools you need, and don't need somebody to do the work for you.
In my experience Friends > Teachers

Here are those FB links. Greensboro has a pretty active scene iirc.
https://www.facebook.com/groups/276445842390059/ (general NC Melee)
https://www.facebook.com/groups/TriadNCMelee/ (Melee nearish to you)

Not really. I'm saying that there's no motive for someone to teach you how to win. It could be too much to ask for, but there's not enough in return for the request. Basically, economics. Supply and demand

Some pros have tried giving gaming lessons for a fee, but I've never heard of any success from it. And really, the best teachers for most players are other players

It wouldn't be much of a lesson if I just let someone hand my ass to me and not explain anything they're doing. All I was wondering is if there were people out there willing to spend some time with a newbie. If you don't want to then you don't have to post anything here. Not everyone expects something in return for sharing their knowledge with other people :p

Well, that I don't necessarily agree with. Teaching other people can reinforce the ideas in your own head. There was that old Albert Einstein quote that I'm about to butcher, "If you can't explain it to your grandmother, you don't understand it well enough."

It's not as optimal as someone rekking you and explaining how and why, but getting rekt is better than playing someone of lesser skill with no 'teaching' involved in either skill scenario. Playing against better players will push you to play better. They'll punish your smaller mistakes more heavily. You won't get away with errors so often

The prevalence rate of good players wanting to teach is far less than the prevelance rate of bad players wanting to be taught

I'm pretty new to Melee too. I'm from the Charlotte area in NC so I would be down to netplay since the connection would probably be pretty good. I feel like I'm kind of in the same boat as you but I feel more like I need people to play with that want to learn and practice as much as I do.

Anguish Anguish if you have general questions you can pm me. Not signing up for a teaching position (i don't main Falco), just saying. I could probably help at times. I'm an old school NC player, used to house PP and others for NC chapel hill locals.

You should definitely sign up for the Charlotte FB group, we've got a very active scene.

Also for NC in general

Going to tournaments as soon as possible is basically the best thing in terms of improvement.

I am in both of those groups already. I'm really excited that there is a scene near me for a game that I'm interested in. I want to get a little bit better before I go to a tourny if I'm going to sign up for a bracket. If I'm going to go just to play friendlies with people then I might go pretty soon.

this guy is clingy, annoying and acts like a child. If you add him be prepared for a headache.
I'm sure anyone who deletes someone else because they can't figure out how to get their own netplay to work is the childish one :)
