Taunts. (THE SALT IS REAL. How do you feel about taunts?)

I don't know why. I don't want it to. But taunts make me so salty. Saltier than the Dead Sea. There are exceptions I admit. But the salt is real when it's in the middle of a fight, when they kill me, or when they keep beating me and they just casually do it every time I die. It's just o.e . I feel happy that I only use the 3DS version so I don't get messages/tag changes from assholes... BUT DEAR CHRIST THE SALT IS REAL. Am I overreacting? How do you guys feel about taunts?

I only taunt at the beginning of the match as a way of saying "lets have a good fight" unless they hit me while taunting at the beginning exposing themselves for being too weak. If its in the middle then it gets salty unless playing with friends saying lame death from the game itself. Crouching is probably the biggest salt since taunting can have different meanings but crouching is mainly set.

I personally don't mind them. I don't use them during competitive play because I know how "rage inducing" they can be, albeit I find it silly, it's a fun little animation. During casuals I'll taunt whenever I feel like it.

Many feel that taunting in the neutral is the most disrespectful form of taunt. This is not true. Taunting after the opponent SDs, is the true mark of a douche bag.

I don't mind them, unless I'm losing really badly. Then it's just salt in the wound.

I don't taunt online, but in offline friendlies I will taunt just to joke around.

My general rule of thumb is to not taunt unless they do it first. If they taunt when I SD it does make me wanna go hard and even the game up, and when I do I'll taunt back to let them know what's up. But nah, I don't really get bothered by it.

I only taunt when necessary, like if both of us are playing Falcon, I like to start the match with a show me your moves. Same if I'm Lucas fighting a Ness or something else like that. Other than that, I use taunts to show that I respect SDs and SD myself to make it fair, and in a few infrequent occasions when I hit a Falcon Punch purely because of the hype. If you couldn't tell, I kinda like Falcon and his moves.

I never taunt. Unless the other player taunt at the beginning of a match, I will run back to my starting position and taunt. I never do that anymore because almost everyone I did that to ran up an hit me. I get happy when they taunt at the start of the match. When they do, I never think they are jerks. And its true, every match I played with those people were always respectful. Some of them even let me win. (After them beating me over 20 times. They did not want me know that they let me win though) But, the people who taunt after every kill... Is just trash. Its annoying and stupid. Some people say "Its just an animation". I really don't care. You have your likes, I will have my dislikes. Taunting is my dislike. When you get KO'ed and they taunt you know what it means. Is not just the disrespect. It more than that. I take smash as a whole seriously. I consider you guys to be family. And when I see the people who taunt, I think, why? Are they that competitive? Are they just being annoying? Ever since Melee (I think) taunting has been more than disrespect. Its like making fun of someone for failing. In smash, I always take that kind of taunting differently. Some taunt I consider to be respectful, but I dont use them because people dont know that. I just never taunt because I can ruin someones day. Someone will say, "Its just a video game". I would say its not. Its something that can connect thousands of people to be more than friends, but family. You can try to say that about some other games like Street Fighter, but if you ask me, the smash community are much closer to each other.
Not sure if I am being dramatic, but I truly feel this way. After watching the Smash doc, I realized Smash is not about hating each other, wanting revenge, or anything like that. If you remember, at the end a ton of people went to play outside. They could do this because of smash. Without it, no one there may have never met. And the final episode touched me. This community was built up because of a game. If we taunted at each other left and right, we would not want to be around the community because of how they acted. Taunting is for disrespect, and I dont like it at all.

Taunt with friends not strangers is my policy.

I recently SD'd in a ranked match on Anthers ladder only to hear a single word echo through my ears. "Okay". I laughed but you already know I went all out to win after that xD

If you taunt, I'm going to attack you during it.
If you taunt more than once, I'll reach through the television and strangle you.

Nothing is more humiliating than knowing you're being laughed at by some sugared-up ****** who's a third of your age. And that's what a taunt is; some nasally giggle from a brat who should have been spanked and sent to his room weeks ago.

I just don't get how people can get so worked up about a taunt. I know you're exaggerating (I hope), but that's a bit much for a simple animation.

It's not the animation, it's what it stands for.
Telling me a taunt is just an animation is like saying that someone shouting "suck my ****" at me is just three words.

I do taunts as little victory things, but never after an SD. That's just cruel.
Gimps though? Taunt all day. It's just something silly and I don't mind if I get punished for it.

Taunting is okay when...
  • you do something impressive (Go ahead and celebrate)
  • you were taunted at first (For great justice)
  • you shield break (You get a shield break, you deserve it)
  • you're in the middle of doing a string (That's just funny)
  • you do something stupid (Laugh at yourself for a second)

That's it. And be aware, most of these uses are definitely disrespectful but I personally don't mind them in these situations.

Don't be one of those guys who taunt after every mundane kill. That's just stupid.

And don't be one of those guys who say "It's just an animation! Why would you get mad?" Giving people "The Finger" is just a gesture. If you flip the bird on someone, you should expect them to get pissed. If you taunt someone, you should expect them to get pissed. It's called a "taunt" for a reason.

You mean that 1 time every 5 matches? I would say I'm always 2 stocking you, but you SD so much that it wouldn't be fair.
So? I get to taunt once every five matches.

Alright, I'll admit, there's more to taunting than just being a "simple animation" but I feel people get too worked up over them. I once heard a story about a guy who threatened to flip someone's chair if they taunted again. That's an extreme example, but really? Loosen up a little.

If I taunt and you get butthurt, not my problem~

how can you complain about someone being a bratty kid when you're throwing tantrums about taunting in a fighting game?

like, cool if it bothers you, that's understandable, but that's kind of much tbh

Meh, I personally don't mind them. I rarely get worked up all over it, but yeah.

I taunt every once in a while.

With teabagging in halo and post-match teabagging in Marvel vs Capcom 3, i've learned to ignore them.

Taunt all you want.

Whenever CPUs KO'd you in Melee, they always taunted, so I started doing it. Now it's just a habit. I tend to perform a quick taunt whenever I score a solid KO.

Now taunting someone after they SD, that's a different story...

Call me oblivious, but until now I never took into consideration the fact that a taunt might infuriate someone. They aren't really something I personally take notice of when I get taunted, but I do it all the time almost by habit. I can only imagine how many people I've ticked off since playing online. Oh my.

I only taunt when it's a kind gesture in the beginning of the fight. If you hit me during my welcoming taunt, that's just... no. I usually only do this if my opponent taunts, or if we've fought multiple, good battles together. Other than that, I do not taunt, unless the character's taunt fits the situation. For example, let's say I'm Falco. If an opponent is trying to fake me out/predict me (and it's obvious), I'll get them away, and follow up by taunting, "Don't try me." But those are special situations that never really happen.

Also, is crouching disrespect? If my opponent is really good, and I KO them at a low percent without doing much work, I hold down crouch for a few moments as a sign of respect, or, "you are a better player, and I don't deserve that KO." That type of thing... does it come off as disrespectful?

Taunting is a waste of time. You could easily be setting something up with that time instead.

When people taunt me, I don't really give a crap. I'm only there to play the game and have a good time.

I do the situational taunts sometimes too. If I'm playing Falcon, and my opponent and I stop away from each other and freeze, I'll tell him to "Come on!"

Crouching can be interpreted several different ways. Just crouching can be a way of saying oops or showing sympathy to a player (like if they SD). It might be possible that crouching be interpreted as disrespect, but as far as I know I doubt it. Tea bagging however, I feel can go either way. Depending on the situation, tea bagging can either show respect it disrespect. Tea bagging after a kill can be interpreted as a taunt or can signify disrespect after an SD.

However, this only what I think. I may have the majority's oppinion, or I could be wrong. You should be safe with simply crouching to show respect though.

I only taunt when the other player is taunting me. I especially do it when I get killed and they taunt me, then I KO them because they were too busy taunting.

I tend to taunt constantly. Whenever I get a good hit in, whenever the opponent is ******* around or whatever, if I get a KO, sometimes I do it to trip them up, I taunt all the time and everything turns into a saltfest. I think taunts are the greatest. I'm the master of DISRESPECT.

Well, shoot, I got all sorts of meanings on my behalf. I'll try to make this interesting.

When I'm playing nice (which is 90% of the time).

If you taunt at the start of the match, I'll do the same. May the best fighter win.
If I SD and you taunt. Fine, f*** it. I'll taunt back. That was a noob move on my part anyway.
If you SD, I won't taunt. Nobody is perfect.
If I throw you across the stage and you missed the ledge trying to make it back, I won't taunt. I'm not going to rub salt in your face.
If you attempt to style a move on me, but fail, I won't taunt.
If you get a good kill and taunt, I'll taunt back. That was pretty awesome.
If I am playing a FG 4 player Smash, and I manage K.O. three of you all at once 5 seconds left of the match and I win, I'm taunting! That was cool, and I've actually had a few peeps who taunt back or compliment me in the lobby!
If you defeat me in a match, and you taunt, well... you deserve to celebrate your victory.

When you decide to be a complete jerk!

I have mix feelings with this, but If I taunt at the start at the match and you hit me, either you're that competitive or you are new to Smash online. Other than that, prepare to lose.
If you double taunt mid-match and you barely took one stock off me, you BETTER win! If you don't, I get bragging rights.
If you have been taunting me throughout the whole match and tried to style me, but fail, I won't taunt back. Instead, I'll save the replay and show it to my friendlies, family, and Sharemode. But be especially grateful that I won't upload your embarrassment on YouTube and Miiverse. I'm not that much of an a** like you.
In FG 4 Player Smash, if you have been milking points off me and you taunt, just to let you know, I was not playing my main. Let me go get him or her next match.

When I am with friendlies.

We cool, right? Taunt all you want! =D

Well, there ya go... Hm..I don't appear to get too worked up when I am taunted. ;/.... Do I?

Honestly, I taunt if the person is okay with me taunting. I never taunt online until the person I'm playing against taunts, and I make sure the person I'm playing with is okay with taunts after something salty happens. It's kind of a code of honor, but if you are okay with me taunting, expect me to taunt frequently!

I do it out of habit. It doens't even mean anythign to me anymore. It's just a terrible habit I can't let go.

Telling me a taunt is just an animation is like saying that someone shouting "suck my ****" at me is just three words.
But... they are...

But I guess it affects people differently.
Considering insults never affects me over the internet, don't exspect me to start a school shooting just because someone pressed a D-Pad.

I taunt after damn near every kill I get, especially with Doc and Snake (dem taunt cancels)

I kind of strive to be as greasy as possible in Smash so it's just another mindgame for me honestly.

I do agree that SD taunters are scum tho
