I've been using Tap Jump since Melee, and now that Im starting to go competitive, everyone's telling me I should turn it off and use buttons. The transition so far has been rough. Right now without Tap Jump I cant even beat a level 9 cpu, something I was able to do with ease. I tried mapping it to buttons, now Im actually switching to the pro controller for the ZL jump because I just cant use L to jump on a gamecube controller. Is turning Tap Jump off really necessary? What are the experiences some of you have had adjusting to it being off, and how can I get used to playing with button jump only so I can take my game to the next level? Any advice would be appreciated greatly

Once I started to play For Glory more often, I too had turned off the tap jump function, it was hard to get used to at first, but after 20 or so matches in a row against LVL 8 CPUs I had retrained myself to use the X/Y buttons to jump pretty well.

Now, without Tap Jump, I can execute up tilts much easier and I don't jump on accident that often anymore.

Just keep playing against CPUs until you reprogram your fingers to use buttons instead of tapping the analog stick, that worked for me.

Do whatever works best for you. As long as you win it doesn't matter if you use tap jump, a wii remote or a 3DS. Don't let people restrict you because they think their layouts are the best.

I personally have tap jump off for the sake of quick utilts, but thats just me.

For a gamecube controller, the Z button is best for jumps. You then map grab to x/y. It's what I do.

tap jamp makes using up special and up smash out of shield easier, as well as jump canceled up smash, but accidental jumping can be a problem if you use the normal control stick for aerials. but if you use c-stick for aerials, you can stick with tap jump.

i played 3ds with tap jump because i was nooby but i switched over to "not tap jump" and it feels kinda better this way

Seconding what @ Kohak Kohak wrote - do what works best for you. You can still be competitive with tap jump on if it doesn't interfere with your ability to do whatever it is you're trying to do at any given moment.

That said, I turned it off because I found it was inhibiting my ability to do attacks that involved an up input. Using the Y button instead also helped me SHFF aerials consistently. The switch resulted in a lot of SDs at first, but, coming from a musical background, I'm used to putting in the time to rewire my muscle memory.
