Tap Jump with Falco

Is tap jump ever used for Falco? I know some people use tap jump for shine -> back air when the opponent is at high percentages, but I've seen similar results when I just use Y to jump.

Also, recently I've had a hard time shine grabbing and I've had mixed results switching between y and tap jump. Is there a general consensus on which is a better to use, or is it just personal preference?

Using Y to jump totally makes it easier to SH out of shine. When I started playing spacies a little, I used tap to jump because I found it to be a lot easier. The problem is you don't have as much control, at least in my opinion.

It's totally just personal preference dude, but people view tap to jump as sort of scrubby.

Having said that, I heard somewhere that Hbox strictly uses tap to jump.

It's mostly personal preference. There's one thing though where tap jump really helps: shine turnaround jumps. Normally when you shine turnaround jump, you need to wait for additional 3 frames for the turnaround to finish. This makes the timing pretty tricky with x/y after turnaround. However you can both turnaround AND jump with a single control stick input, angled up and little bit backward, thanks to the tap jump buffer window. Angled tap jump also guarantees that you don't waste frames between the turnaround and jump. Though you still have to time the input properly to account for the shine lag (the frames 2 and 3 of shine when you can't yet jump) and possible hitlag.

I use tap jumps for pillaring, and Y for waveshines and other jumps (standing full jumps/short hops). The only other button I use for jumping is X and I use that for normal wavedashing.
